September 28th 2014-October 9th 2014
Our kick-off fundraiser for the school year will be a Read-A-Thon. One of Carl Sandburg’s focuses is improving reading skills and the Read-A-Thon is a great way to promote reading at home and at school!
Please have your child return the reading log each day so they may hear their name over the announcements and receive a small prize.
On Friday, October 10th, there will be an assembly to award all children who participated in the Read-A-Thon. We are very excited that this will prove to be an awesome fundraiser that also gets our kids reading!
Rules:
  1. Student (Parents) will solicit family, friends and neighbors to sponsor them in a Read-A-Thon beginning September 28th.
  2. Family and friends will choose an amount per page to sponsor the child (e.g. $.25 per page)
  3. The students will set goals for number of pages read.A. daily goal
B. end of Read-A-Thon goal.
  1. Pages read can include the following:
  1. Students reading aloud or to themselves.
  2. Someone reading to the student.
  3. Student listening to a book on computer/iPad or tablet/smartphone
  4. Student reading multiple words in the community (10 words = 1 page) such as McDonalds, Cheerios, traffic or street signs.
  1. Each entry will need to be signed off by parents.
  2. Each week students will bring in signed goal sheet.
  3. A paypal account will be set up so sponsors can donate on line. Sponsors can also donate by check (payable to Sandburg Parent Association) or cash.

Spotlight on – ABA
ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. ABA is about the study of behavior (actions and skills) and how behavior is affected by the environment. This scientific approach helps us to better understand why we do what we do and the impact of the people, places, actions and things around us. ABA is many times thought of as specific to children and adults with autism but can be applied to any person.
The entire program of PBIS is based on this approach – children tend to engage in behaviors that result in a positive outcome. The trick is finding out what the child wants. For instance, if a child puts away his/her toys and the parent claps, smiles and hugs the child AND the child finds these actions rewarding – it is likely that the child will put the toys away again.****

Co-Location Information:
As many of our families are aware. CSLC is slated to be co-located with Maryvale Elementary School in Rockville. The CSLC and Maryvale Roundtable Advisory Committee was comprised of both CSLC and Maryvale parents and staff members. Additionally, MCPS personnel from the Department of Special Education Services and the Division of Long-range Planning facilitated the meetings. An architectural firm, Architecture Inc. was hired to develop co-location site approaches for committee review and analysis.
On November 17, 2011, the Board of Education approved the collocation of CSLC to the Maryvale campus. Due to budget constraints, the plan to co-locate has been pushed to a completion date of 2021. For more information review the Capital Improvements Master Plan.
Late Arrival/Early Dismissal:
Please sign your child in/out in the office if (s)he arrives late or leaves early.
Staff will walk your child to/from the classroom. When parents walk directly to the classroom it interrupts instruction for the entire class. If you would like to schedule a conference with the teacher, please see Susan Dowling or Toni Baron and we would be happy to make sure the meeting is scheduled. Thank you for supporting the instruction of the class.
