Activities

1.  List all of the signs the little dog passed and saw. Draw two to three of them.

2.  Draw a birthday card for your mom on construction paper.

3.  Design the shirt you might give your mom on her birthday.

4.  List five things you could give your mom for her birthday.

Introduction

1.  Have a wrapped box on the table. Tell the student it is your mom’s birthday. Ask them what they would get their mom if it was her birthday. Then ask the child what a dog could get its mom for her birthday. Say, ‘Let’s read and see what the dog in our story gets his mom.”

2.  Have a birthday card on the table. Ask the student when their birthday is and what they want for their birthday. Ask if they always get what they want. Say, “Today we’re reading about a little dog who goes shopping for his mom’s birthday. Let’s see what he gets her.”

3.  Have a picture of a birthday cake. Ask the student what their favorite birthday present has been so far. Ask them if they have ever bought a present for their mom. Say, “Today we’re going to read about a dog’s adventure of getting his mom a birthday present.”
