A list of journals of interest for Ph.D. students in management

A+ class journals- give 20 or 24 points in Polish ranking system, they are underlined and in bold on this list. They are a must-read for all scholars in our discipline, you have to regularly skim for articles of interest.

A class journals – give 15 or 10 points in Polish ranking system. Along with A+, these are the top quality journals in our field. You should regularly look for articles in them, and also aim for a publication there, once you have something really good.

B class journals – give 6 points in Polish ranking system or don’t give specific points at all (so by default they give 2). If on this list you see “(no rank)” remark, you can assume it is a high quality international journal not listed in the Polish ranking. It doesn’t give you many points in the Polish system, but it usually gives you more recognition than other B class journals, even if they are listed in the Polish ranking. On the other hand, all of the best Polish journals, even if they just marginally fail to be included in the global A class ranking, will receive only 6 points, so this is a wide category. Papers, which you get fully rejected from A class, should go here.

C-D class journals - give 4 or 2 points in Polish ranking system, they are in italics on this list. They usually are easier targets for getting published, but writing an article there, all in all, requires almost as much effort as for the B class and gives much less credit.

Unlisted journals – there are quite a few B class journals that are not listed here. Usually, they are either very specialized (e.g. Tamara Journal for Critical Organization Inquiry) or relatively too new (e.g. European Management Review) to be listed. Some are very respected and known, but didn’t make it to A-class, which, as you must remember, is very selective and competitive (e.g. Scandinavian Journal of Management, Information and Organization). You should use your best judgment in deciding where they belong, taking into account the publisher (if it is Elsevier, Science Direct, Emerald, Routledge, or other respected publisher, the chances of better quality are generally higher), the authors (big shot names, such as M. Feldman, S. Barley, B. Czarniawska, J. Pfeffer, to mention just a few, often are signs of quality, even though some journals may invite stars to submit to shine in their light), as well as the members of the editorial board and the editors - all factors are important, you don’t want to make a mistake of sending a good quality article to a mediocre journal, as you will waste a year of your work on something that will not give you sufficient credit.

Please, remember that if you are supposed to pay to get published in a journal, it is virtually always a scam – don’t do it, because this “publication” not only will not give you much credit, but also it will stay on your record forever and one day somebody will ask why were you scamming.
