A Level (year 2) Scheme of work introduction

This scheme of work is designed to be used in tandem with our A Level year 2 student books and eTextbooks – and by extension with Integral online resources.

There are three tabs: The ‘sequence of topics’ tab gives a sequence and timings for two teachers sharing the teaching equally with one doing the mechanics and the other doing the statistics. The chapters are placed on a timeline so that it is easy to see where topics can be swapped between teachers and whether both teachers are progressing through the material so as to cover it by the time of the examination. Obviously timings can vary between different classes.

The tab ‘Precedence diagram’ is a network showing which chapters have to be done before others. The sequence of topics is based on this and a different split between teachers can be devised/checked using this network.

The tab ‘A Level scheme’ gives the detail to support teaching the material. The learning outcomes for each section in each chapter are given, together with advice on teaching the content of the topic. This advice is informed by many years of teaching the topics and an awareness of the demands that the changes in the examination will make on students and teachers alike.

MEI have kindly allowed the referencing of tasks from the Integral website for each chapter; you will find some explanatory notes for some of the resources in the relevant unit at http://mei.org.uk/2017-sow . Further tasks from Nrich are included too, in order to develop the thinking skills required in each topic.

Opportunities to use technology, a key feature of the new A level, are identified for each section where it is relevant. You should aim to use technology as much as possible to develop understanding and facility with the software available.

The over-arching themes of Language and proof, problem-solving and modelling are mentioned for each section where they are relevant, sometimes to suggest an activity, sometimes to raise awareness.

This scheme currently covers all four new A Level specifications that we publish (OCR specifications A and B (MEI), Edexcel and AQA). Later in the year we will publish individual schemes for each of these.
