A JOINT RESOLUTION memorializing former State Senator Gates F. Young.

WHEREAS, Gates Young was born in Calhoun, Kentucky in 1891, the son of John B. and Brownie Young; and

WHEREAS, Gates Young served as a legislative page during the 1904 Regular Session of the Kentucky General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, Gates Young practiced law and worked as a journalist in Owensboro early in his adult life; and

WHEREAS, in 1929, Gates Young was elected by the people of Daviess, McLean, and Hancock Counties to represent them in the Kentucky State Senate; and

WHEREAS, Gates Young later moved to Louisville to practice law and was elected in 1957 to the State Senate representing Jefferson County; and

WHEREAS, Gates Young also served the Senate in such constitutional offices as Sergeant-at-arms, Janitor, Assistant Clerk, and Clerk; and

WHEREAS, Gates Young, a longtime horse racing enthusiast, served as assistant to the president of Churchill Downs and manager of the old Latonia Race Track; and

WHEREAS, Gates Young established the John B. and Brownie Young Educational Scholarship Fund and served as a member of many boards and charitable organizations during his long career in public service; and

WHEREAS, Gates Young should be honored for a lifetime of achievement;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Transportation Cabinet shall name Kentucky Route 136 in McLean County from the intersection of Kentucky Route 81 to the Ohio County line the "Gates F. Young Memorial Highway."

Section 2. The Transportation Cabinet shall, within thirty days of the effective date of this Resolution, erect signs at each end of the route specified in Section 1 of this Act that read "Gates F. Young Memorial Highway."
