七、閱讀測驗
Indonesia is home to many orangutans, or “men of the forest” in Malay. Orangutans-human beings’cousins-are also nicknamed red-haired apes because their hair is typically reddish-brown instead of black or brown like the hair other apes have. However, today only two critically-endangered species are found in the rain forests of the Indonesian islands, for many species have already died out due to the threats humans pose, such as pollution and climate change.
Recent fires have destroyed much of Indonesia’s forests and pose the latest threat to the survival of the orangutans. Thirty orangutans fleeing their burning forest home have been killed by villagers, who see the animals as crop raiders. Orangutan mothers have been killed so that their young can be captured and sold into the illegal wildlife pet trade. Orangutan experts continue to receive orangutan infants whose mothers have been killed while searching for food in plantations and fields.
Fires caused by drought along with those used to clear forests have destroyed more than two million acres. When a fire burns down into a rain forest’s layer of dry peat, it can burn slowly off and on for months or years after the original fire. These fires continue until heavy rainfall soaks the peat through and through.
Indonesia’s orangutans once numbered in the hundreds of thousands. However, their population has suffered a drastic decline over the past few decades because of fire, the destruction of forests from felling trees for timber and agriculture, and losses linked to the live-animal trade. The government of Indonesia estimated that in 2004 there was a total wild population of 61,234 orangutans. Today, a large number of organizations are working hard for the rescue, rehabilitation, and reintroduction of orangutans. (改寫自87年大學入學考試)
