Data Archiving for Oerational and Strategic Student Reporting
Brett Magill, St. Louis University
Of interest to Reporting; Student
Session #MW28
RElational Database Management Systems, like Banner, are efficient, even elegant, in their approach to data storage and retrieval. However, the multi-table, normalized data structures that make RDBMS so effective in these areas also create challenges for end-users who want to meet basic reporting requirements in higher education. Colleges and universities need easy access to day-to-day operational data as well as long-term strategic data for planning and trending; this includes the need for auditable, point-in-time data to comply with internal and external reporting requirements. This requires data to be set aside, in static form, at regular intervals. In this session we will describe the developement and implementation of a data archiving system to meet such reporting demands at our institution. This was accomplished using only a reporting tool, without the addition of a data warehouse or operational data store.
