Textbook:

A complete electronic copy of book 1 and book 2 of the Electrical Installations textbooks as a PDF. When the ‘Textbook’ button is clicked a menu appears in a box in the centre of the screen.

Click on any of the section titles and the PDF will open taking you straight to that section.

You can then move around the book using the scroll bar (go up and down the screen as if reading the book), typing in the page number in the box on the bottom of the screen (takes you straight to that page, useful if you are using the index), using the search tool (you can type in a key word like hazardous and the computer will find all the times that word appears and where), or using the bookmarks at the side which will take you straight to a specific part of the book. Each chapter is broken into a number of sub-chapters, all listed in the bookmarks. This is explained briefly in the ‘Help’section (see below) and also in Adobe’s own help file.

What PDFs can do:

The simplest way to use these PDFs in class is to print them out. To do this, simply click on ‘Print’ in the toolbar. A window will open allowing you to choose if you wish to print the entire document or a range of pages.

Those who wish to further customise the information in the product can try the following techniques.

With PDFs you can copy text and images as a picture using what is called the ‘Snapshot Tool’. This picture can then be inserted into a range of software, including Word and PowerPoint. Once inserted in your software the picture can be changed using that software’s usual tools (the edges can be cropped, the size can be changed) but, as usual, the content cannot – in other words, you cannot edit any text copied in this way.

You can copy any amount of wording from a PDF as text using the ‘Select Tool’. This text can then be inserted into your documents and be edited. However, the ‘Select Tool’ will not copy pictures, only the text around them.

Please consult ‘Help’ on the CD or Adobe’s own help file for precise instructions of how to use these tools.

Users can create documents with a mixture of pictures and editable text. Select all the text required using the ‘Select Tool’ and insert it into your document and then do the same for any pictures using the ‘Snapshot Tool’, being sure not to select any text.Although reasonably straightforward for a document with a small number of images, this can become very time-consuming and intricate when dealing with larger numbers of pictures.

What PDFs can’t do:

Create a fully editable version of documents including images with a single click. Word documents will not be provided with any of this series.

Suggested use:

Textbook – Copyspecific images and sections of text for use in your own presentations and documents to make them look more colourful and professional.

All other sections – Print out entire PDFs or specific pages from them exactly as is with no editing, for use as a hand-out, test or reference material. It is possible to adapt the sheets and this is particularly easy with those without images. However, those with images, especially very image heavy sheets, can only be edited with a great deal of effort. We would advise that only those very comfortable with Word, Adobe and inserting images attempt this.
