Assessment Rubric: Annotated Bibliographies

Consider… I have 120 students, and all are required to turn in a minimum of 10 pieces of annotated research (1,200 total) plus a book report. How can I conceivably assess all this? Here’s how…

Each piece of research is 25 points. It will be read and “checked” according to the range finders below.

+: A range, 23-25 points; excellent work.Time, effort, and diligence are apparent. The work is completed to the best of your ability. Sources reflect college-level research.

  • Research reflects depth and proper perspective and understanding of your topic
  • (ethos) The source is reliable and useful (primary sources are best)
  • Formatting is correct
  • Summary, Assessment and Reflection is thoughtfully completed

 : B level, 20-22 points; above average work. The work was completed, but more support and effort could be employed. You understood the assignment, but might have done better. Sources could be more college-level material.

  • Research reflects some depth, perspective and understanding of your topic
  • (ethos) The source appears reliable and useful (primary sources are best)
  • Formatting may be off
  • Summary, Assessment or Reflection is completed, but not as thorough as the A-range

-: C range, 18-19 points; average work. An attempt was made to complete the assignment, but your understanding of it is not clear, effort is lacking and the work may be sloppy. Sources could be average to weak.

  • Research reflects that you are on-topic, but not reaching into enough depth and understanding
  • (ethos) The source may lack credibility, or may not be useful
  • Formatting may be off
  • Summary, Assessment and Reflection are completed, but may lack substance

U: D range, 15-17 points; unacceptable work. Your work appears incomplete, rushed, or is incorrectly done. It appears you are the completing the assignment “for points” not to understand your topic and reflect on it correctly. You will receive the lowest passing grade for simply completing the assignment in.

Writing a Bibliography—25 points assessment (-5 for each revision)

This assignment allows little room for error; for point credit, you must keep revising them until you get them correct… try for the first time!

Due 9/30

This part is easy, but correct formatting is essential. I don’t recommend an on-line tool for this, but you can give it a try if you want. Generally, by the time you fill in the information and correct the formatting, you could have written it yourself.

If you wrote correct entries in your annotated bibliography, all you need to do is copy and paste them into a new document, then reformat correctly—you need to refer to OWL for this. All reading/research done in this first phase should be included in the bibliography.

Basically, it’s just simply double-spaced and alphabetized, with the title “Bibliography”.

When you use a source in your paper, it must be “cited”. For this, you will create a “Works Cited” page, and copy/paste the entry again, but this time, include page numbers, when applicable.
