Scope

The primary purpose of the Mental Health Therapist will be to provide evaluation and therapeutic services to eligible Tribal Members. The Mental Health Therapist will make the appropriate referrals and will be responsible for ensuring services are meeting the needs of clients and that services being provided are in accordance with professional practices and legal requirements. Routine duties shall include providing health care related services to individuals eligible for services provided by the Burns Paiute Tribe in homes, schools, clinics, alternate job sites and other community locations.

Must be adaptable to a flexible work schedule; have experience working with native communities and have quality characteristics that would display a positive role model for our community. Outgoing nature, honesty, and willingness to immerse oneself in a tight-knit community are desirable traits. Must also be licensed, bonded and able to provide a personal computer and other office supplies for use as needed.

Responsibilities/Duties

1. Assess, develop, implement, and evaluate an effective and efficient treatment plan that will appropriately meet the needs of individual clients, utilizing program, agency and community resources.

2. Provide treatment in outreach locations, as needed, such as jail, home visits, and schools.

3. Perform comprehensive intake interviews, observe clients, and provide client based services.

4. Select approach to use in individual and group therapy, such as directive, non-directive, and supportive therapy. Plan frequency, intensity, and duration of therapy.

5. Network with other professionals, in various Oregon DHS and tribal mental health programs, or with parole and probation personnel, lawyers, judges, district attorneys, teachers and school administrators, psychiatrists and other mental health providers, as needed to implement effective treatment.

6. Follow clinical guidelines for best practice.

7. Prepare clinical documentation and billing forms according to agency and departmental guidelines.

8. Participate in the development and implementation of new services, as needed.

9. Participate in accreditation and site reviews, as needed.

10. Participate in assessment and intervention with Wadatika Health Center and Symmetry Care providers, as needed.

11. Assist clients in navigating through other community systems such as schools, courts, and primary care.

12. Advocate for client needs and community benefits as requested by community organizations, including The Burns Paiute Tribe Social Services and Alcohol and Drug Treatment Services Departments.

13. Must be willing to work as a team and aid in the infrastructure of a new mental health program; creating intake, screening and other documents as needed.

14. Billing of eligible patients is required; therefore, a provider number is absolutely necessary.

15. The incumbent will be called upon to accomplish other tasks within their scope of work.

16. Travel as required for grant orientation and regional training.

17. Work with and support the efforts of the Burns Paiute Prevention Coalition.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledge of theories, principles, and practices to include various theoretical models of psychotherapy; psychological assessment and report writing, crisis intervention, and ethical issues in the practice of mental health counseling.

If a Licensed Psychologist, knowledge of both cognitive and personality psychological testing and report writing is expected.

Skills in providing diagnostic, preventive and/or therapeutic services to clients.

Knowledge of psychotropic medications, treatment interventions for dual diagnosis, family systems theory, and trauma informed care models.

Knowledge and skills in family counseling and child and family therapy.

Knowledge of the psychological effects of illness on individuals and their families, and the role of psychological factors in the exacerbation of illness.

Knowledge of historical oppression and the effect is has on tribal members.

Be willing to obtain certification to become a Civil Commitment Investigator in order to act as a Qualified Mental Health Professional on behalf of the Burns Paiute Tribe in Emergency Commitment Situations.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Ability to compile information to aid clients in carrying out treatment objectives.

Ability to function positively in an environment of limited resources.

Ability to relate well with a diverse group of people, including staff and the public.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of medical records and adhere to the standards for health record-keeping, HIPAA and Privacy Act requirements.

Qualifications/Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

· Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology. Or a Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, and/or Couples and Family Therapy. Or be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Appropriate independent licensure is REQUIRED. Must submit copy of degree or transcripts with application.

· Must possess and maintain an Oregon independent license as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Licensed Psychologist, REQUIRED. Non-Independent licensure will not be considered for this position. Must submit copy of licensure and provider number with application.

· Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience is REQUIRED. Clinical practicum, internship, and post-graduate supervised training can count toward requirement.

· Must possess and maintain a valid Oregon Driver’s License, (out of state applicants must receive ODL within 90 days of hire), have good driving record and be insurable by the Burns Paiute Tribe.

· Experience in the assessment of suicide risk, self-injurious behavior, and all high-risk behaviors and case management of high-risk clients.

· Experience with clients who have been victims of physical and/or psychological trauma, with attention to early intervention.

· Experience with multi-cultural backgrounds, Native American’s in particular, is highly desirable. Knowledge of oppression, historical trauma, and Native American grief and loss is extremely pertinent.

· Must submit to and clear an Alcohol/Drug Screen and random testing as per policy.

· Must submit to a background check, as per Tribal Policy.

Indian preference will be given to candidates showing proof of enrollment in a federally recognized tribe.
