Bead Necklaces Show Early Detection Benefits

Women’s Way bead necklace sets are available as an educational tool for volunteers, health care providers and others interested in promoting breast and cervical cancer early detection. The beads are a three-dimensional illustration of the average-size breast lumps found by women who have not been practicing early detection compared to the average-size lumps found through screenings. For example, the average-size breast lump found by accident is nearly as large as a golf ball, while the average size lump found through regular mammograms is equal to the head of a pin. Breast cancer is more successfully treated when detected early.

The necklace kits include all the materials needed to put together a complete necklace. There is an instruction sheet illustrating how to assemble the beads and describing what the beads represent. A lapel button can be worn with the necklace to draw attention to the beads. It reads: "Hey girlfriend! Ask me about my beads." Wear a set to promote Women’s Way one-on-one, or use it as a teaching tool in group settings. North Dakotans can call to receive one complimentary set, which is sent out along with a program brochure, three informational flyers and a volunteer interest form.
