INTRODUCTION

This psalm reflects upon the times of God’s deliverances of his people and summons them to worship, reflect and give thanks to HIS awesome, almighty PERSON and POWER! As I reflect upon the Psalm, I cannot help but recognize that the Psalmist considered God’s awesomeness in the diverse history of Israel, but he never forgot their greatest hour when Jehovah led them out of the bondage of Egypt under the leadership of Moses, and over the Jordan under Joshua!

We who are followers of the Lord, should allow ourselves to use this lesson to reflect upon the great and awesome person and power of Almighty God to lead and direct our every thought and activity of life! The author is unknown but there is something to remember as we read and reflect upon its contents… “Our God is an awesome God , He reigns from Heaven above! He rules with power and love, OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD!”

Let us consider our Anticipated Power Points…

· T he Superiority of o ur Awesome God. Psalm 66:1-2

· The Supremacy of our Awesome God. Psalm 66:3-7

· T he Security of our Awesome God. Psalm 66:8-9

· T he Sanitizing of our Awesome God. Psalm 66:10-12

· T he Sacrifice Due our Awesome God. Psalm 66:13-20

THE EXPOSITION OF THE TEXT

I. The Superiority of our Awesome God. Psalm 66:1-2

The Psalmist calls for the whole earth to recognize the awesomeness of God in Psalm 117:1-2, “O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.” And note the words of Isaiah the prophet in 40:22, “It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.” So what should be all the earth’s response?

Psalm 100:1 tells us, “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.” In Psalm 67:3 we are told, “ Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee.”

II. The Supremacy of our Awesome God. Psalm 66:3-7

Beloved, as we examine God’s supremacy, words like pre-eminence and total incomparability come to mind. Note:

A. His awesomeness requires a response. vss. 3-4

1. The response of enemies. vs. 3

2. The response of the earth. vs. 4

Psalm 65:5, “ By awesome deeds in righteousness wilt thou answer us, O God of our salvation; who art the confidence of all the ends of the earth, and of them that are afar off upon the sea.”

Psalm 19:1 (NKJV), “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.”

B. His awesomeness calls for remembrance. v ss. 5-7

The past deliverance from the Red Sea and Jordan River are brought to Israel’s remembrance by the Psalmist. (Read Exodus 14:21 and Joshua 3:14-16). In verse 7 the psalmist declares the incomparability of God. The writer of II Chronicles reassures the believer that our awesome God sees everything. II Chronicles 16:9 (NKJV) tells us, “ For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro through out the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him…” Psalm 89:6-7 says, “For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD? God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.”

III. The Security of our Awesome God. Psalm 66:8-9

The Psalm writer reminds Israel and teaches the believers for all times that Jehovah is our refuge, a very present help in times of trouble. (Psalm 46:1). Jude 1:24-25 lets us know, “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.”

IV. The Sanitizing of our Awesome God. Psalm 66:10-12

Now the writer teaches us to remember from the experiences of Israel that God cleanses and tries His own. I simply call it “Sanitizing.” Remember what Brother Job learned in Job 23:10, “But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold .” Israel expresses it this way in Isaiah 43:1-2, “But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”

CLOSING

Beloved, all that Israel faced caused her to truly know that our God is the awesome and almighty God and above all, He is totally reliable and worthy to be worshipped and praised. He then closes the Psalm with his personal desire to offer true worship unto Him. Read verses 13-20 and let us do likewise!
