Windows Administrator Advisory Group

April 4th 2012

The meeting was called to order and the minutes were approved. There was an overwhelming response to the filling of position of Vice Chair. So we decided to continue the meeting since it was going to be hard to pick a candidate for the position. ACNS gave an update of the Server Consolidation project.

The Server Consolidation project is waiting for the Business plan approval. July 1st is most likely for the official offering. Some of the specifics of the project were discussed as follows:

A Windows Server on Hyper-V will have the license already covered so there is no need to purchase one. If a Windows server is on the VMware, then you will have to purchase a license for the OS. This will be offered like a Service Level agreement. Costs for this will be set as follows:

· A “Standard” server will cost $550 whether it is on Hyper-V or VMware

o 1 CPU

o 2Gb Memory

o 50 Gb Hard Drive (mirrored/replicated and backed up)

· Additional CPU cost of $150

· Additional Gb memory cost of $40

· Additional Gb of Hard Drive space cost of $0.55

Dave Carpenter gave an update/information on the HP Soul Source project. The RFP was originally set to use the same as Colorado University, but Dell rejected it. This is an effort to save money on the purchase of desktops and laptops. The RFP includes CSU, CSU Global and CSU Pueblo. There four respondents to the RFP. HP won as we all know. Contract is in negotiation with HP and Zunesis. Updates for “todays” standards are ongoing. The Standards can be purchased thru Zunesis and are customizable at increased cost. There will be next day shipping for the standard configuration. This does NOT include servers or printers. But the University is recommending purchase of these thru HP for reduced pricing. Target date is for May 1st, but more likely July 1st for this to go into effect. HP will be bring the “Standard” configurations on campus for presentation (Dates listed below)

Windows 8 is coming out and is in Beta now which can be downloaded. Not many have played with this. Those that have concur that the worst part is the Frontend. Supposedly the Server version is better, but has the same Frontend.

Server backup methods were discussed. There were a variety of methods and type of media (Disk, Tape etc.) implemented throughout departments. Here are some of the methods discussed:

· LTO tapes now have Terabyte capacity

· CommVault software backup (seemed to be a favorite)

· DPM (used on the exchange servers)

· Backup Exec (Ramtech has a contract)

Mobile Technology is increasingly becoming a presence on campus. Ramtech is purchasing Galaxy Tabs now for sale along with the Apple IPad. The College of Agricultural Sciences has 5 Motorola Xooms for student check out. They have been used for doing surveys by students. The Library also has some tablets for student checkout. Ramtech has setup the Apple Developer program, contact Diane Noren if interested.
