The Great Gatsby Setting Map

Due Date: Friday, May 3

Objective: To understand the important role setting plays in the novel, The Great Gatsby, by applying knowledge of the setting through interpreting the descriptions in the novel and using these descriptions for further analysis of symbolism, the characters and theme.

Areas Required on Map:

1. East Egg

2. Buchanan's house

3. West Egg

4. Gatsby's house

5. Nick's house

6. Long Island Sound

7. Valley of Ashes

8. T.J. Eckleberg billboard

9. Railroad tracks and motor road

10. Wilson's garage/house

11. New York

12. Tom and Myrtle's apartment

13. Map of LI and NYC

Process:

1. Students will be divided into groups of 2 or 3. The class will be provided with one large sheet of wall sized paper. One group will draw the map of western Long Island, the 5 boroughs of New York City and the surrounding bodies of water. The remaining groups will be assigned 2 or 3 of the above sub-settings.

2. In your assigned groups: Paraphrase the descriptions of the 2 or 3 assigned settings in one paragraph each. Be sure to cite the page numbers used for obtaining the descriptions. Turn this in separately with the name of the person physically writing it first, followed by the other group members’ names (no name, no credit---all should assist in writing). NOTE: Some settings may be described in more than one place in the novel.

3a. The group assigned to draw Long Island and New York City will need to look at maps of the area found in the library or online. Your map must include the Long Island Sound and the Island of Manhattan (aka NYC). This group must write one paragraph describing the physical area; climate, terrain, and distance from LI to NYC. Cite your source(s)

3b. On white paper, sketch a picture, in pencil, of your assigned settings (1 sheet of paper for each setting). Once your group is satisfied with the drawing, make it creative and colorful. There are plenty of markers, colored pencils, crayons and crafts in the room. You may cut your setting out or construct it using other materials.

3. Place your “settings” in the proper place on the large map of Long Island and NYC .

4. Be sure to clearly label your settings.

Assessment:

The settings are worth a total of 60 points. Each individual’s work habits will be documented to receive full credit. Please look over the attached rubric when meeting with your group. Be aware of how you will be assessed before you start the assignment.
