What a great summer Seneca County 4-H had! We have completed a busy summer with camp, judging, the fair, and the Grade A Celebration.

We would like to share our appreciation and gratitude to all of the 4-H members, advisors, and families for everything you do for our 4-H program throughout the year. All of our events would not be possible without all of you and we thank you! Congratulations to all members on their projects, placings, and state fair participation and awards. Keep up the good work!

Cloverbud Camp Recap

Cloverbud camp was held on August 15, 2017 at the Meadowbrook Park in Bascom. Eight cloverbuds attended the day camp and participated in team building, mixers, recreation, bottle rockets, and water activities.

End of Year Packets

Club end of year packets are ready for pick up at the Extension Office. These packets contain member/volunteer certificates, pins, senior pictures left from the booth, honor club forms, and forms for secretary and treasurer books. Tenured volunteers also have gifts that can be picked up when the club packet is picked up.

4-H Projects and Senior Pictures

There are just a few projects left from the fair this year and a few from last year! Some senior pictures are also here and we were unable to put them in your club packet because they were picked up prior to. These items and pictures will remain in the office until the end of the year and then they will be disposed of.

New Volunteers and Club Information

We are always looking for new volunteers to serve in clubs or in other groups. Interested individuals should fill out a potential volunteer application, set up an interview, complete a background check, and Policy 1.50 training.

Now is also the time of year prospective members’ start calling looking for a club to join. Please let Erin know if you are accepting new members, where you meet, if you have cloverbuds, and a contact name and number. You can call the office or email me with the information.

2018 Volunteer background checks and fingerprints

Letters were sent out recently to volunteers who were selected to have their fingerprints done for the 2018 4-H year. This is a requirement in the state of Ohio to be a volunteer. If fingerprints are not completed by December 31, 2017, you will not be eligible to volunteer for 2018. Volunteers can be reimbursed for the cost of their background check by bringing the reimbursement form and receipt to the Extension Office. Background checks can be done anywhere that offers the service but some of the paperwork included in your letter only pertains to North Central Educational Services.

Quality Assurance Information for 2018

There is an opportunity for volunteers to be certified to be an assistant quality assurance instructor. There will be an Assuring Quality Care for Animals in-service to be held on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. Registration is from 9-9:30 a.m. with the in-service beginning at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $35/person and registrations are due by Friday, October 13, 2017. If you are interested in this opportunity to receive training; please contact the Extension Office for registration details.

There will also be training held at the Extension Office for volunteers looking to be certified and those volunteers needing to be recertified. Trainings will be held in the large conference room at the Extension Office and costs $5.00/person. Cash and checks payable to OSU Extension will be accepted at the training.

Every member taking livestock (except horses and dogs) must attend a quality assurance training. First year members taking a livestock project MUST attend a county wise quality assurance session and a parent/guardian must be present. QA must be completed by May 1, 2018.

There are four options for completing QA training:

· Attend one of the countywide trainings offered in Seneca County. Countywide training will be offered on the following dates with locations to be determined. All first year members taking livestock must attend a county QA session with a parent/guardian. The test out option will be offered again this year only at the countywide QA options listed below. Youth ages 15-18 years old who pass the QA test can test out of the annual QA program permanently. These ages are as of January 1, 2018- a youth’s 4-H age.

o Wednesday, February 28, 2018, 6:00 p.m., with test out starting at 5:00 p.m.

o Tuesday, March 27, 2018, 6:00 p.m., with test out starting at 5:00 p.m.

o Sunday, April 29, 2018 4:00 p.m., with test out starting at 3:00 p.m.

· Attend a qualified QA training with/in your club. Certified assistant instructors will be able to teach QA at the club level. If they choose to open it up to others to attend, a list will be complied and you will be notified.

· Attend a qualified QA training in another Ohio county-fees may apply. You can call the Extension Office for dates and times.

· Attend a qualified QA training at an Ohio approved event. These could be at a clinic, Beef Expo, Dairy Palooza, etc.

Mandatory Policy 1.50 Training

Volunteers, please mark your calendars to attend one of the mandatory Policy 1.50 trainings and 4-H update. Any active volunteers must attend a training to be a volunteer in 2018.

Teen Workshop

A Teen Workshop will be provided for all teens and parents who are interested and want to know more about how to get involved and what opportunities are available to them in the 4-H program. This will cover county, state, and national clubs, award trips, and scholarships. The Teen Workshop is for any 4-H teen 13 years and older and will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at the Extension Office from 6-8 p.m. There is no cost to attend. Carving New Ideas (CNI)

It’s time to register for Carving New Ideas! This fall camp tradition hosted by OSU’s Collegiate 4-H Club is “Going for the Gold” November 3-5 at 4-H Camp Ohio. 4-H members in grades 8-12 are invited to join in this great weekend. Carving New Ideas is a camping opportunity for older youth, concentrating on the principals for critical thinking and program facilitation. The focus of the camp will be healthy living, striving to make winning strides in each of the health focuses of the camp. Sessions and speakers, along with other fun, will focus on making us all healthier, one gold medal at a time. Registration details and other information can be found at: go.osu.edu/CNI17

Award Trip Scholarship Applications

There are scholarships available to help with the cost of some of the award trips offered through 4-H. The scholarship applications are due to the Extension Office by Monday, December 11, 2017. Scholarships will be available on the website and in the Extension office shortly.

2018 Important Camp Information

Mark your calendars for the 2018 Seneca County 4-H Junior Camp at Kelleys Island on Tuesday, June 26-Friday June 29, 2018. Again, for the 2018 year, there will be no full camp scholarships given out. We highly encourage you to start thinking of ways you can save up for camp now. It could be a fundraiser with your club or saving a little each month. Scholarships at most will be half of the cost of camp per camper/counselor.

2018 Important Camp Counselor Information

Camp counselor applications will be due to the Extension Office by December 11, 2017. Applications will be available on our website and in the Extension Office shortly. Interviews for counselors will take place on December 27 and 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. First year counselors will be considered counselors in training (CIT’s) and will be required to help with Cloverbud Camp on Tuesday, June 12, 2018. The 2018 junior camp on Kelleys Island will be Tuesday, June 26-Friday, June 29, 2018.
