February 10, 2009
We’ve been working on the Agenda for Student Success since the fall of 1997. During that time, we have held an extended dialogue across campus, reviewed education research, and participated in lengthy deliberations. Throughout, the process has been managed by the Faculty Senate, but the Agenda has been written and developed by all constituent groups.
The Agenda for Student Success is organized around five primary initiatives: Student Work, Teaching Expertise, Instructional Program Excellence, Learning Services/Support, and Academic Infrastructure.
1.0 Student Work Initiative
This initiative identifies projects that affect students’ time on task—time spent on educationally meaningful activities.
1.1 Habits of Mind CampaignOverview:
Many Cerritos College students struggle academically because they don’t apply themselves the way that our successful students do. There are many reasons for this (fulltime jobs, family commitments, etc). But many of the students that struggle are simply unaware of the practices that lead to successful learning. This is principally because of their first-generation-student status. In the spring of 2009, we will address this issue directly by launching a habits of mind campaign. The campaign aims to teach all 24,000 Cerritos College students, how to practice and adopt success-oriented habits of mind—habits like how much time they should spend studying, time management, education planning and much more. We need campus-wide participation for this to be successful.
Update:
· The Habits of Mind Campaign started in classrooms this semester
· The HOM Taskforce is up and meeting on a regular basis

1.2 Academic Excellence Awards
Overview:
The Academic Excellence Awards ceremony is scheduled in March each year. It is organized by the Senate Committee on Academic Affairs and the Academic Excellence Awards subcommittee. The event aims to celebrate learning and call attention to academic achievement by 1) honoring the individuals that have demonstrated excellence in learning; and 2) inspiring other students to dedicate themselves to academic excellence. The awards ceremony also serves as a source of content for the habits of mind campaign, providing testimonial video from award recipients.
Update:
· Applications are due on 2/12/09
· The Ceremony is scheduled for 3/24/09

1.3 Transfer Push
Overview:
We estimate that approximately 2,000 students will be eligible for transfer this year and if past performance prevails, more than one half will not fill out transfer applications. The Senate, in collaboration with the Transfer Center, has organized a Transfer Push effort to address this issue. Under this program, faculty contact students that are eligible for transfer, offering support and encouragement in an effort to get more students to apply to 4-year institutions.
Update:
· Several faculty and administrators participated in a brainstorming session on how to take the Transfer Push effort to the next level.
· Initial discussion of the brainstorming ideas will be discussed/presented in a meeting on 2/25/09

2.0 Teaching Expertise Initiative
This initiative identifies projects that help with sharing, sustaining and developing teaching expertise across the entire faculty.
2.1 Body of Teaching Practices/FIGsOverview:
Cerritos College does not have an institutional approach to establishing, sustaining and developing teaching expertise across our faculty. Without this, there is no way for us to preserve and disseminate a body of practice. We have a reservoir of teaching expertise at the College that is rarely shared with our community of teaching professionals. We need to discover that reservoir by capturing our best teaching practices, in an overall effort to build a body of practice that can be sustained, developed, and transferred from generation to generation. Immediate needs include the development of a website that displays our best practices with video pulled from the Outstanding Faculty Awards and findings from our Faculty Inquiry Groups (FIGs). Seven FIGs will be announced and sponsored this year.
Update:
· All seven FIGS are up and running.
· The figs have been organized around the Habits of Mind Campaign
· Results from each FIG should be available by the summer of 2009

2.2 Outstanding Faculty Awards
Overview:
The Senate Committee on Professional Relations organizes this event every year. The event is held in the spring semester as a celebration of teaching excellence. The goals of the event are to 1) honor individuals that practice excellence in teaching; and 2) inspire other faculty members to reach for or maintain excellence themselves. The ceremony also serves as a source of content for the Body of Teaching Practices effort by producing a video centered around the Most Outstanding Faculty Member award recipient.

2.3 Part-Time Hiring Process
Overview:
To make sure we are hiring the highest quality faculty members, we need to address some of our part-time hiring procedures, including the emergency hiring process. The Hiring Standards Committee is taking the lead on this process. The Committee is phasing in new procedures this year and will exclusively proceed with the new procedures starting the summer of 2009. Departments that have adjunct faculty members below minimum qualifications should be actively recruiting and screening qualified candidates during the Fall 2008 semester and/or submitting applications for equivalency.
Update:
· The Committee is experiencing a significant increase in equivalency applications (this is good).
· The Committee has contacted all departments and deans, requesting that they determine if they would like to use local standards or minimum qualifications for their hiring practices.

3.0 Program Excellence Initiative
This initiative identifies projects that promote excellence across all instructional programs.
3.1 SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes)Overview:
The Senate recognizes the importance of SLOs at the course, program and institutional levels and intends to address all accreditation concerns[1] with an approach that has meaningful and direct impacts on student success. To address these issues the Senate is establishing a new Senate Committee title the “Senate Committee on Student Learning Outcomes.” The Committee will leverage the substantial work that has been underway in this area for the last several years in an effort to meet the recommendations outlined by the accreditation team. The committee will commence under the designation of taskforce until the shared governance approval processes recognizes the committee as an official Senate Committee.
Update:
· The SLO Taskforce has been meeting regularly
· They are developing an SLO strategy for the campus and will be presenting a draft of the strategy to faculty on 2/26/09

4.0 Learning Services and Support
This initiative identifies projects that nurture, enhance and develop services which offer direct benefit to the learning processes at Cerritos College.
4.1 College Leadership AssessmentOverview:
College leadership includes Board members, administrators, deans, managers, senators, committee chairs, union leaders, constituent leaders, and Department Chairs. We need this group to protect and nurture the core values of Cerritos College by keeping communications open and flowing, make decisions in a collaborative and transparent manner, nurture relationships, support innovation, hold deliberations that are civil, and focus on student success. We need College leadership to continually aspire to these standards by holding each other accountable to them.
Update:
· This is on hold until we have selected a new President.

4.2 Developmental Education Plan
Overview:
The desire to address developmental education needs at an institutional level has been a key part of the Agenda for Student Success since day one. It is a major priority in the College strategic plan and has recently become a key initiative stemming from the Chancellor’s office with dedicated funding and state level support. This emphasis has led to this year’s launch of a comprehensive developmental education plan at Cerritos College. The implementation will rest with the coordinator, Francie Quass-Berryman, the Developmental Education Committee (chaired by Jan Connal), and the broader campus community.
Update:
· This Committee has made a successful transition from taskforce to shared governance committee.
· They are meeting regularly and meetings are very well attended.
· The Committee is making solid progress with implementation of the Dev Ed Plan for Cerritos College.

4.3 College Strategic Plan and Education Master Plan
Overview:
The 2005-2008 strategic plan is drawing to a close and we need to begin writing the next plan. The College Committee on Planning and Budget is primarily responsible for the development of this plan. The committee has held preliminary discussions related to the plan, acknowledging the need to craft an Education Master Plan prior to the writing of a new College Strategic Plan.
Update:
· The College strategic plan has been extended for two more years. This will give the College a chance to focus on the Education Master Plan.
· Dr. Reece and Dr. Brock have been meeting on the Education Master Plan and hope to have a draft completed by the end of the Spring 2009 semester.

4.4 State of Education Address
Overview:
The State of Education Address is an annual message delivered to the campus community. The goal of the address is to consistently and analytically review the strengths and weakness associated with student success at Cerritos College. To assist with the address, the College will be providing analytical support from the Department of Research and Planning. This year’s address will be held in the spring.
Update:
· The State of Education Address will be presented in the Spring 2009 semester.
· The date of the address was set, but has been delayed because of Nathan Durdella’s resignation.

5.0 Academic Infrastructure
This initiative identifies projects that help provide superior facilities and systems to support learning at Cerritos College.
5.1 Instructional SpacesOverview:
Instructional Spaces (physical and digital) are the most important spaces on campus—this is where our core mission most directly happens. Instructional spaces that are beautiful, clean, well equipped, and designed to human scale, inspire learning. At Cerritos, there is a great disparity in educational space quality that needs to be remedied. We need to continue with the development of instructional space standards, inventory all instructional spaces according to these standards, and develop a plan to bring all instructional spaces up to those standards over a 3-4 year period. This year the Senate will be working collaboratively with the Faculty Union to develop a plan.
Update:
· The CCFF has develop a comprehensive proposal to address this issue.
· They are in the middle of negotiations.

5.2 Academic IT (Information Technology) Resources
Overview:
Increasingly, IT resources play a prominent role in the teaching and learning process. Resources currently impacting the academic environment are in the midst of significant development. TalonNet, smart classroom technology, the College website and more have direct impacts on the quality of our academic program and direct bearing on student success. The faculty members and students that use these systems need them to be at their best.
Update:
· Online faculty have (presumably) made the transition to teaching through TalonNet.
· TalonNet was successfully updated to a new version in Dec/Jan 09.
