Description of Lesson
Lesson Title / Relating Fraction and Decimals Review ( Convert fractions and mixed numbers to decimals)
Grade Level/
Subject Area / 5th
Number of Sessions / 1-2
Objective(s) / Students will be able to change /convert fractions and mixed numbers to decimals.
Brief Summary of Lesson / Fraction /Decimal Checkers- Students will play a game of checkers by relating fractions and decimals.
Standards
Curriculum Standards / 6.A.1.c Identify or determine equivalent forms of proper fractions
Procedures
Materials and Resources / Checker Board Worksheet
Pawns or colored disks
White dry erase boards or paper and pencil
Motivation (The ‘Hook’) / Play Secret Identity of super heroes ( see lesson plan step 1)
Detailed Steps of Lesson / Whole Group Activity
1.  Have students complete a spiral review warm-up
2.  Play a game of Secret Identity (See game pieces for Secret Identity)
Secret Identity
1.  Ask students if they have ever heard of Superman, Bat man, or any other super hero. Explain to them that these are not their real names. They have a secret identity. Ask them if they can identify or name their real names. Here’s a short list
·  Batman – AKA Bruce Wayne
·  Superman – AKA Clark Kent
·  Incredible Hulk – AKA Bruce Banner
·  Spiderman – AKA Peter Parker
·  Cat woman – AKA Selina Kyle
·  She-Hulk –AKA Jennifer Walters. She is the cousin of the Hulk
Tell students that fractions also have a secret identity/AKA equivalent decimal.
2.  Pass out white boards, markers, and erasers (one per a student). Place students in teams.
3.  Place fractions cards in a pile face down.
4.  Draw one card and display. Ask students to find the fractions secret identity/AKA Equivalent decimal. Have them determine the fractions equivalent decimal using white boards. This is a great informal assessment before having them work independently.
5.  Ask students to show boards and the team with the most correct answers receives a Secret ID card. If teams have an equal number of correct answers, pass out a card to both teams.
The winning team is the one with the most Secret ID cards at the end of the game.
Partner activity
1.  Teacher models the following game with whole class.
( See checker board)
2.  After modeling game place students in pairs or groups to play game.
Fraction Decimal Checkers
1.  Place pawns on the first row of white squares.
2.  Decide which player will begin the game.
3.  Player one moves one pawn diagonally to a new white space.
4.  The player must then change the fraction that is written in the square into a decimal number.
5.  The opponent must agree with players answer in order for the move to be legal.
6.  If move is considered not legal the player must move pawn back to the white square that the move originated from. The player must pick a new move on their next turn.
7.  Once the move has been classified as legal or not legal the other player can than make their move.
8.  Players continue making moves until all their pawns are on the opposite side of the board.
9.  The first player to get all their pawns to the opposite side of the board wins.
10. At no time during the game are player allowed to jump pawns.
Independent Practice
1.  Students complete Crossword Puzzle on Fractions independently.
2.  Pass out homework
Management Strategies / Be enthusiastic
Differentiation:
Remediation and Extension / Remediation:
In small group, practice making fractions with decimal squares and then have the students write the decimal and fraction for the models made. When students have a visual understanding of why a decimal/fraction can be equivalent, begin relating fractions and decimals using mathematical operations. After finding each equivalent fraction/decimal mathematical, have the students build models to check.
Extension: Have students make a game of their own. (see student sheet, You have been hired)

YOU HAVE BEEN HIRED!!!!!!

Point by Point Brothers has hired you to develop a board game that helps children practice decimal strategies. The game will help children practice converting decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals.

You will need to make a total of fourteen game cards for players to solve. Seven cards will need to display a fraction on the front and its equivalent decimal an explanation of how to solve on the back. Seven cards will need to display a decimal on the front and its equivalent fraction and an explanation of how to solve on the back. In order for the game to be played you will need to include game rules and all components needed. The type of game board is your choice. If the game requires more then fourteen game cards to play you can make more but not less.
