·  Arriving to classes prepared to learn

Students experiencing difficulties will be offered school based supports (Refer to W.P. Sandin Academic Intervention Protocol). If students are not demonstrating active participation or success in the course he or she may be required to:

·  Work in an alternate location

New Policy: Participation in Extra-Curricular Activities

Participation in athletics and all other extra-curricular activities is a privilege. Attendance (AP 324 and AP 302)

It is important for students to regularly attend school. If a student is going to be arriving late, leaving early or missing school, we ask that his or her parent/guardian contact the school to explain the absence (feel free to leave a message on our phone or send an email: ). The school secretary will contact parents at home or at work if a student has an unexplained absence. If no one is home a message will be left on your phone, if you would like, we can email you regarding the absence instead. Please call the office if you are interested in having attendance information sent to you via your email.

Please refer to the Attendance and Assessment Policy (listed below) for student attendance requirements for students in grades 10 - 12.

Bus behavior

Students riding buses to school are expected to behave in the same manner as at school. If there is a problem, parents will be contacted by the bus driver. Students may lose bus privileges if inappropriate behavior continues. See SRPSD AP 554 and AP 302. http://www.srsd119.ca/DivisionPolicyHandbook.html

Canteen

Our canteen will be open at morning break and the first half of lunch time. Items sold in our canteen meet nutritional guidelines as per Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division Nutrition Policy AP 159. Our school is energy drink free. Students are expected to consume their drink outside the school or immediately deposit it in waste containers as per the supervisor’s request.

Cell Phones/Electronic Devices

Electronic devices can be a powerful educational tool and an equally powerful distraction. For that reason, electronic devices may be used during breaks and for teacher approved class activities. We ask parents needing to contact their student during class time, to call the office instead of disturbing your student during instructional time. Our school belief is to educate students on responsible, ethical and moral use of technology. Inappropriate use may result in having the device confiscated and may also require a parent to pick up the device at the office.

Students may be required to surrender their device prior to the start of class.

Students should have privacy and safety at school, therefore, the use of cameras and video is restricted to SLC photographers and photography to be used within academic classes.

Extra-Curricular Activities

All students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities. Research suggests a student’s achievement increases when involved in extra-curricular activities. As an academic institution our priority is academics. To participate in extra-curricular activities a student must have a positive academic standing. Refer to the athletic brochure.

Footwear

In order to provide a safe environment and to keep our school looking fabulous, students are required to remove all dirty/wet footwear at the door. Students must have other shoes to change into.

Hats

Hats are permitted to be worn in school, however teachers may ask students to remove hats while attending their classes, assemblies, and/or presentations. Hoods, bandanas and sunglasses are not to be worn indoors unless required for a medical purpose.

Inclement Weather

Our school remains open in inclement weather. Listen to the radio in the morning regarding bus cancellations. See SRPSD AP 551 and AP 551A.

Language

As a school, we strive to have positive communication between all members of our school community. Inappropriate language (cursing, negative, derogatory) directed at a staff member or another student is disrespectful and not acceptable. Inappropriate language may result in suspension.

Late Arrival

Students arriving late for class or leaving early must sign in at the office before proceeding to class. Students arriving late can disrupt the classroom, the learning of others and flow of instruction. Students need to arrive to class on time.

Library

The library is open for Grade 8 - 12 students during the lunch break. Students are invited to work on school work during this time.

Students are welcome to sign out books and are responsible to return them in the same condition as when they were taken out. If books are lost or damaged, the student will be charged to replace the book. When students are in the library during class time or spare time, they are expected to conduct themselves in a quiet manner as fitting of a library. Computers are also available in the library for students to use, following the technological guidelines as set by Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division AP 143. If students use computers inappropriately, computer privileges will be lost. Students are asked to follow the library terms of use as directed by school staff.

Lunch

Our grade 6 – 8 students will eat in their home room from 12:20 - 12:35. Grade 6 – 8 students that have written parental consent are welcome to leave the school during the lunch break. Grade 9 – 12 students may eat their lunch in the student lunchroom. Grade 9 – 12 students are welcome to leave the school during the lunch break.

Physical Education

Students are expected to change into appropriate dress for physical activity during their physical education classes. Appropriate dress includes shorts or sweat pants, t-shirt and a separate pair of non-marking runners, other than their outdoor shoes. We ask parents to ensure your child has appropriate PE clothes and non-marking running shoes (please no ‘skate’ shoes)

Smoking

As of August 15, 2010, the Government of Saskatchewan, proclaimed the provision which bans tobacco use on school grounds by students, staff and all visitors. This new provision includes both smoked and smokeless tobacco, as well as electronic cigarettes (vapes). Parents will be contacted if their child is found smoking on school property and suspension will occur.

Spare Periods

Students are encouraged to take a full course load. Grade 11 and 12 students may take spares with parent permission. Students with spare periods may be in the library, in the student lounge, or out of the building. We ask students not to be in the hallways as this may disrupt classes. Grade 11 and 12 students may leave the school during spare periods but are required to sign out and sign in at the office (we require this for fire regulations and safety in case of a lock down).

Sports Teams

Our sports teams participate in the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association and the P4A league. Attendance at practices and games is an expectation. Parents may be asked to help with transportation to games. Students playing school sports will be given a pamphlet outlining the expectations of student athletes.

Student Leadership Council

The SLC is our student voice. They organize activities for students and raise funds to support the school and community. Students are encouraged to participate and become involved.

Student fees

Student fees subsidize the cost of student activities, trips, SLC activities, etc. A student fee form will be sent home at the beginning of the year with the registrations forms. Student fees will be due by September 15 of the academic year. All outstanding student fees of a grade 12 student are required to be paid for a student to participate in graduation.

Technology

Students have access to computers in the computer lab and in their classrooms. The first time students log onto a school computer they will be required to read and agree to the SRPSD’s Acceptable Use of Technology Guidelines. See SRPSD AP 143. If not followed, suspension of computer use will occur.

Verbal Threats/Threatening Behaviour/Bullying/Physical Violence

We are all concerned about the safety and well-being of students and staff. Verbal threats, bullying and threatening behaviour are not acceptable within the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division and W. P. Sandin Public High School. All incidents will be investigated and dealt with appropriately. Refer to SRPSD AP 351.

Weight room

The weight room is an opportunity for students to improve their fitness level through weight training. This room is available for students from Grades 9 - 12, during noon hours and during spares. To access the weight room students are required to:

Ø  Sign in at the office

Ø  Have a staff member open the weight room

Ø  Work out with a partner never alone
