Volunteer Opportunities

Dear Friends,

Let me introduce myself-I am the Chapter leader for the local Roseville Chapter of the National Stuttering Association (NSA). We are working to dispel myths and provide accurate information to the public about stuttering. The NSA supports stuttering awareness through support group meetings, workshops and their website. I hope that you will spread the word about our NSA activities during the coming months and years. Once you get hooked the NSA will teach you things about yourself you never knew. You will take away so much more than you’ll ever put in. I encourage all of you to read about the NSA at www.westutter.org

We need volunteers year round who can help with a long list of outreach activities. Some of the activities include:

We will talk to School Districts and help teachers who have students who stutter in their classroom. We hope to provide mentors to students who stutter to help them advocate for themselves and respond to bullying and teasing. Several NSA members may provide first hand advice on what it’s like to stutter when we meet with schools and businesses.

We would like to provide support to those who stutter who are seeking employment. The job market is tight and the talents of those that stutter may be less appreciated by employers. Let’s educate employers and provide opportunities for everyone!

Bayside disability Expo in Granite Bay-it is held yearly-check their website for upcoming dates. We will need lots of volunteers to prepare for the event as well as staff a booth for our local Sacramento/Roseville chapter. We need individuals to help create displays we can use year round for fairs and school presentations.

In May we hope to staff a booth for the NSA to celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month in the Roseville Galleria Mall.

In late spring or early summer 2012 we want to hold a fun run to advertise the Fall Youth Day Conference.

We need students to be on talk shows and radio stations promoting the NSA activities and fall 2012 youth day conference.

In October 2012 we hope to host a conference for the Youth group of the NSA in Roseville. We would like Sac State students to lead groups and coordinate the flow of attendees during the conference. We also welcome volunteers from the service groups on campus.

We have a new website www.sactovalleyspeech.org. It’s a start but needs lots of work. We need volunteers to help post articles and interviews from people who stutter and their families.

We need individuals who stutter to speak for A Touch of Understanding (ATOU) www.touchofunderstanding.org. ATOU visits schools and businesses to promote disability awareness, including stuttering. We’d like students to help revise NSA’s awareness materials for stuttering.

Many of the activities can easily fit in your schedule, you don’t have to attend meetings and you can help anytime of the day or night. The projects will take as little as ten minutes per month or as much as 10 hours or more per month if you have the time available. We need individuals who can help with phone calls, emails, printing, typing, organizing, filing, responding to newspaper and television requests, webpage support, art, music, science, marketing, letter writing, acting, singing-whatever your talent we will find a use for it! Decide what you enjoy and we will find some fun activities for you to do. Recruit your friends and spend some time with quality people!

The NSA Chapter is willing to offer you a great learning experience, education, recommendation letters, verification of volunteer hours for possible scholarships and the eternal thanks of the NSA and all its members. I have worked with individuals who stutter for over 25 years and would love to share my knowledge with anyone who desires. Many of our members have great stories to share and would be happy to help answer your questions about stuttering. They are the experts on stuttering and welcome your interest.

Our Roseville Chapter has been around for less than 3 years and we have already made an impact. We were awarded NSA Chapter Leader of the Year for 2009. I think we are off to a great start and we have so much more to do! The Chapter meets from 6:30-8:30 and all of you are welcome to attend. The flier for the NSA meeting is attached.

Please contact Eric Salter at 916-533-6298 or to volunteer for NSA projects.

All my best,

Nancy
