NAME ______PERIOD ______
VOLUME OF REGULAR AND IRREGULAR OBJECTS:
Problem: All matter takes up space, but you cannot use a ruler on a rock or other irregular shaped objects? You have to use the ______method.
Hypothesis: The measurement of volume can be accurately determined by methods other then just using a ruler.
Materials: Graduated cylinder calculator ruler “package of materials”
Procedure:
- Obtain a bag of items from Mr. Zimmerman.
- Each bag contains 7 objects: a wooden block, 2 metal blocks, 2 cylinders, a marble and a penny.
- Calculate the volume of all the two metal “blocks” using a metric ruler. Record your results in the Data Table #1 below. Show the calculation for all your work.
Formula: L x W x H = cm3 or (pi)r2(l)
Data Table #1: RULER METHOD / Volume: cm3 or mLLarge metal block
Calculations:
Small metal block

- Calculate the volume of the metal blocks, metal cylinders, marble, and penny using the method we learned using the graduated cylinder. Record your results in Data Table #2 below. Show your calculations on the line under each one of your entries on the table below.
Formula for Irregular Volume:
Ending Volume - Starting Volume = Volume of object in ml
Data Table # 2: GRADUATED CYLINDER / Volume: cm3 or mlLarge metal block

Analysis/Results:
- What is a meniscus?
- What item had the largest volume?
- What item had the smallest volume?
- What is the name of the method for determining volume using a graduated cylinder?
- Fill in the blanks 1 ml = 1 ______
- Other than the different units, did the measurements we got for volume using a ruler in Table equal the measurements for volume from Table 2? Why?
- Which Table do you think contains more accurate measurements. Explain in at least three sentences.
- Why is there more then one size graduated cylinder. Discuss why a student would use one size of graduated cylinder instead of another
Conclusion: 5 sentences demonstrating what you learned in this lab?
