VISITING UNDERGRADUATE ELECTIVE STUDENTS: INFORMATION SHEET
1. To whom must applications be addressed? All applications and correspondence for elective placements at Victoria Hospital are to be addressed to Mrs J H Peare, Victoria Hospital, Private Bag X2, Plumstead, 7800. Telephone (021) 7991161: Fax: (021) 7615108: E-mail . (Please note however, that we cannot conduct correspondence by fax. If we receive a fax from you, we will respond by mail or E-mail)
2. How long in advance must I apply? Applications must be admitted at least six months in advance of the proposed visit. The reason for this is that most departments are fully booked up to 18 months in advance, and that the process of registering batches of applicants with The Health Professions Council of South African in Pretoria takes some months.
3. Who is eligible to be considered for an elective placement:? We accept visiting students from other medical schools who are in their final year of study. Only students who can communicate effectively in English can be considered.
4. In which departments can one spend an elective period? The departments offered at Victoria Hospital are Surgery, Medicine, and a few places in Emergency Medicine. If no places are available at Victoria Hospital you may apply to the Faculty of Health Sciences, Private Bag X3, Observatory, 7935, Cape Town, South Africa. E-mail – .
5. What is the duration of an elective placement: A maximum period of four months per discipline is allowed. Preference will be given to students who apply for a 4 month period.
6. May you extend or shorten your elective period once you have been accepted? No. The University of Cape Town will not allow you to shorten or extend your elective period. Furthermore the University will NOT certify that a full elective term was spent at their medical school if a student actually returns home earlier.
7. Registration with the University: Registration with the University of Cape Town is required for the duration of the elective period. Students who have been allocated to Victoria Hospital must on arrival in Cape Town call at the Faculty Office, Medical school in the mornings only, between 08h30 and 13h00 in order to be registered. Donations for the elective period must be paid in advance by means of electronic banking, details will be given in Forms B and C.
8. Donations: Once we have informed you that we can accommodate you in one of our departments you can secure the booking by following the instructions on Forms B and C.
Failure to pay either the donation or the registration fee by the stipulated date will result in your elective period being cancelled immediately. Donations are payable within 2 months of booking an elective period.
The total registration fees applicable are as follows:
The Health Professions Council of South Africa Registration Fee = 2010 - R551; 2011 – R611; 2012 – R 671.
Student elective donations are R3500.00 per month or part thereof which includes the R800 registration fee that the hospital has to pay to the University.
Fees will only be refunded in the case of death or serious illness and upon proof by way of a medical or death certificate. 20% of fees will be deducted for administrative costs.
9. Do UCT or Victoria Hospital provide financial assistance or remuneration? No remuneration is received by students during their elective period. Students must therefore have sufficient funds for the period of their elective clerkship.

10. Is Accommodation provided? Students must make their own arrangements for accommodation. A list with information on private accommodation is sent to students with the letter of acceptance from Victoria Hospital.
11. Dress: White coats must be worn and a limited amount of coats are available at the hospital. Students must be neat and presentable at all times. Student identification cards will be supplied on arrival.
11. Study Visas: All foreign students who intend to spend their elective periods at universities in South Africa are required to obtain study permits before they enter South Africa. As soon as you have received our letter confirming your elective placement, you have to apply to your nearest South African Consulate or Embassy for a study visa. You will require 2 passport size photographs, a letter of invitation from this medical school confirming your placement and indicating that you are being registered with The Health Professions Council, and a letter from your own University confirming that you are a final year student. You may only apply for a Study Visa 6 months before you intend to travel, therefore your letter of confirmation will be post dated, please keep it in a safe place until it is time to apply to the SA Consulate.
12 Am I covered by insurance during my elective clerkship?
If you spend an elective period at Groote Schuur to Red Cross Hospital and have been registered with the University of Cape Town you will have professional indemnity cover to the value of R20 million (please note, however, that the excess is very high) and limited personal insurance cover. It would be advisable for you to take out additional insurance in your own country before your visit. If you spend an elective period at any of the other hospitals mentioned, you are not covered by the University of Cape Town Insurance. You will not have HIV/AIDS cover (see below) . PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN ANTI RETROVIRALS WITH YOU.
13. The maximum benefits are:-
· Death : R2000.00
· Medical expenses R5000.00 (except that the first R100 of any claim is borne by the
claimnent
· Physiotherapy : R600
The following exclusions will be applied:
Events consequent upon:
1. War, invasion, act of foreign enemy hostilities (whether was be declared or not),
civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection or military usurped power;
2. Suicide (whether felonious or not) or any attempt thereat or self-injury;
3. The injured person engaging in aviation (other than as a passenger) or flying in anycraft owned by or leased to the insured;
4. The student engaging in:
(a) professional sports
(b) mountaineering with ropes (unless he/she is a member of the Mountain and Ski Club)
(c) any motor racing, which will mean competing against another or a clock:
(d) hang-gliding (except where the individual is a member of the University’s Hang-gliding Club), parachuting or sky-diving ;
5. Pregnancy or childbirth;
6. Any pre-existing physical defect or infirmity;
7. Death or injury caused by use of drugs, alcohol or narcotics;
8. The insured person suffering from sickness or disease not directly resulting from bodily injury.
9. Infection with HIV , AIDS , ARC or any opportunistic infections and/or malignant neoplasm (tumor) found in the presence of HIV, AIDS , ARC
OTHER INSURANCE
Apart from the above scheme , the University provides no other cover for bodily injury, illness or death of students and no cover for personal possessions , including motor vehicles, even where a student may be involved in compulsory academic activity. Students must arrange their own insurance cover.
REGISTRATION ON ARRIVAL
ALL STUDENTS MUST REGISTER AT THE FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCE BEFORE THEY WILL BE ALLOWED TO START THEIR ELECTIVE PERIOD.
