Upper School Athletic/Co-curricular Program Descriptions

BOYS SOCCER

This competitive athletic program is open to all interested soccer players (including beginners). Based upon roster numbers, there may be both a varsity and junior varsity team offered. Athletes are placed according to skill level.

· Season: Fall

· League: SENEISSA of NEPSAC

· Preseason: Last full week in August

· Ends: Second week of November

· Practices: M, T, Th (3:45-5:15), W & F (3:30-5:00)

· Games: Most games will be held at 4:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays

· Coaches: 3

Ø Participants provide their own: cleats, shin pads, socks (Blue & White)

GIRLS SOCCER

GIRLS FIELD HOCKEY

Girls of all skill levels are encouraged to join and learn the sport. Based upon roster numbers, there may be both a varsity and junior varsity team offered. Athletes are placed according to skill level. The Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) rules state that all field hockey players must practice for at least 10 days before playing in her first game. It is essential that players attend all preseason practices in order to play in the season opener in early September. The RIIL also requires that new field hockey players submit a RIIL Assumption of Risk Form (to be issued at preseason practice). The form requires notarization (the Head of School’s Administrative Assistant, Pat McNally, is a notary public.) This form must be signed and then handed in to the Athletic Director before the first game of the year.

BOYS & GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Beginner and advanced runners are welcome to compete at the varsity level of this competitive athletic program. The team competes in seven or eight meets a season with area private schools.

DRAMA - DECKHANDS THEATER COMPANY

The Deckhands Theater Company has partnered with Trinity Repertory Company (TRC) to offer three co-curricular opportunities for students in the Upper School. Productions will have a more intensive rehearsal schedule two weeks before the show.

2015 Fall Production: Growing Up: A Dramatic Experience, part three

*No audition required

*No Tech Crew needed

Students in the Upper School are invited to participate in the third annual fall variety show. A wide variety of scenes, monologues, as well as both small and large group musical numbers will be rehearsed in a workshop format.

Complete rehearsal schedule will be provided during the first week.

RECREATIONAL SAILING

Due to boat availability, this program has a limited number of openings.

· Begins: First full week of classes (Sept)

· Meet: This program normally meets 3-4 days a week (3:30-5:15) at instructors' discretion

· Limited to: 12 sailors

· Instructors: 2

· Requirements: Swim test, dress for conditions

TEAM MANAGER

All Upper School competitive programs are encouraged to have a team manager. Team managers are required to attend all games and practices. They are encouraged to participate in exercises with the team when possible. Responsibilities of the team manager include keeping the scorebook at games, keeping track of the roster, helping with uniform distribution and collection, preparing water bottles and returning them after use, making sure that there is a med kit at away games and helping the Director of Athletics to set-up and break down after home games. Other duties may be given from the head coach.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT AIDE

On occasion, there will be an individual who is either interested in learning about how an athletic department is run or the basics of athletic training services, or needs to fulfill the requirement and is unable to participate in sport. The athletic department aid is a position that needs to be applied for. Certain qualifications and approvals are required in order to be an aid. Athletic department aid(s) are required to be available for the athletic department daily from the end of school until the last game or practice has ended unless otherwise specified. Some responsibilities will include score table coverage, set-up and break-down of games, golf cart driving assistance, help with uniform distribution and collection, gymnasium and locker room supervision and other responsibilities given from the athletic department.

This competitive athletic program involves a co-operative team combining Rogers High School and Middletown High School and Rocky Hill School. It is essential that players attend all preseason practices in order to play in the season opener. Audition required

No Tech Crew needed

Students in the Upper School are invited to audition for this straight play. This work will be rehearsed in a workshop format, ending with an on campus production and participation in the State Drama Festival.

Complete Rehearsal Schedule will be provided during first week.

· Location: Stage

LIFETIME FITNESS

Ability to participate in the programs is based on seniority and time of sign-up (higher grade level gets priority). The program provides access to a personal trainer during daily visits as well as once a week optional workouts. Basic concepts of conditioning and nutrition are discussed. Included in the fee is a temporary student membership with Ocean State Health and Fitness. OSHF requires that a liability waiver be signed and returned prior to using the facility. Transportation is provided for up to 14 individuals, more individuals can participate if they can provide their own transportation.

· Class Length: 9 Weeks

· Location: Ocean State Health and Fitness

· Limited to: 14 participants; 25 max with drivers

· Fees: $125-140 per season ($45/season for current member, $200 for full year membership)

Ø Participants must dress appropriately for exercise activities.

YOGA

This program is open to all individuals interested in yoga (beginners, intermediate and advanced).

· Begins: After Thanksgiving Break (Dec)

· Ends: First week of March

· Class Length: 8-10 weeks

· Meet: M, W, Th (3:30-4:45)

· Location: Flynn Lecture Hall or other if needed

· Limited to: 20 participants

· Fees: $100 per student

· Instructors: 2

The shot clock keeper in basketball is responsible for attending all home Upper School varsity basketball games. This can end up being 2-4 games per week and some weekends.

Athletes are placed according to skill level. Helmets are provided, if providing a helmet, it must meet appropriate standards and must be blue.
