SCHOOL OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES

FACILITIES GUIDELINES FOR RESEARCH STUDENTS

Study Areas

1. The School of Arts and Humanities has approximately 45 study spaces for full-time research students. There are also a number of hot-desking spaces available.

2. Applications for space will be dealt with on a first come first served basis. See form below for details.

3. When facilities become available, the Graduate Studies Administrator or Postgraduate Programme Administrators will endeavor to provide allocated access for a maximum of four years. Once students are on ‘enrolment only’ status, desk space may be on a shared basis with other students, or by hot-desking.

4. It may be necessary for students to participate in a shared desk arrangement at earlier stages of their research when the demand on places exceeds availability. At times there may be a waiting list for the allocation of study space.

5. Students who are allocated access to a desk space and who spend a semester away from the University, or who go on Leave of Absence must advise the Graduate Studies Office, since the vacant desk will be available for use by another student.

6. Designated study space is not provided for part time students. However, hot-desking facilities for part-time research students are provided in Room C20. These spaces may also be used by full time research students who may only require occasional desk space.

7. If you are undertaking work as a Teaching Assistant in the School, your study space should not be used for office hours and meeting students. A separate space will be allocated to you for this work by your Divisional Administrator.

Computing Facilities

1. The School provides standard computing facilities in all research rooms controlled by the Graduate Studies Office.

2. If students wish to purchase their own machines while studying at the University, the School may be able to provide the necessary funds to allow the machines to be adapted.

3. Research postgraduate students will have access to printing facilities in student print suites in Pathfoot, as well as School networked printers.

4. Any faults and technical problems should be reported to Extension 7250 for the Computing Advisory Team to deal with and not to Divisional Offices or the Graduate Studies Office.

Stationery

1. It is the responsibility of individual Divisions to decide whether they wish to provide their research students with paper for printing and with sundry items of stationery.
