Shared Reading
Sing the song about the seasons “4 Seasons in a Year”. Reread interactive chart and review over for shared reading. Reinforce foundational skills. Revisit the text Apple Farmer Annie by Monica Wellington to discuss how the illustrations contribute to the meaning of the story. Discuss how the reader knows that Annie finds satisfaction in her work. (May need to go over meaning of satisfaction)
STEM Connection:
Identify Annie’s problem: (she must remove the skin from the apples). Then, identify the tools that Annie uses: (review what tools means & discuss the knife and a peeler). Next, introduce more efficient peeling methods using technology: (rotary peeler/corer). Finally, introduce and demonstrate engineering design-(how gears work together to make things move): (cut, peel, core). Students will then be extending engineering design with using toy gears. Have students work in small groups to construct gear designs using the toy. Take digital photos of gear designs. Could also use Flip video recorder to record groups working together.
