Troubleshooting of System 44

1. Why are students getting a blank black screen when they launch System 44?

A: If you double-click System 44 only once the program should open normally. If you over-click the icon on the desktop you can actually start more than one media service causing System 44 to open black. This can be avoided by being careful and patient with the icon. A more efficient way to avoid this issue is to use the start menu to open the application instead of the icon.

2. If I get a black screen, how can I exit the program quickly?

A: In order to exit the application on a PC without force-quitting you can simply press ALT F4.

3. Adobe AIR is asking to update, should we update it?

A: Yes, it is safe to update AIR. You can also cancel the update without doing any damage. If you use deepfreeze and allow the update it will ask again after a re-start of the computer unless you disable deepfreeze during the update.

4. Can we disable the Adobe AIR updates?

A: Yes. Install the SettingsManager.air application on a computer to disable the updates. Simply run the application with all defaults selected. When it is done installing a window will appear asking if you want to disable the updates.

5. My students are not able to get past the microphone check when they say their name after logging in. (May appear as freezing to teachers and users.)

A: This issue is related to microphone sensitivity. System 44 is looking for a 2-3 second pause after the student says their name. During this pause none of the green recording indicators should be on. Sensitive microphones can pick up noise from the room, hallway, or pod that make the program think the student is still saying their name. One workaround is to have the students put their hands over the mic after they say their name to cover up any background noise. Another option is to turn down the mic’s volume settings. This can be done on Windows machines by going to Control Panel and selecting Sounds and Audio Devices. Click the Audio tab if it is available. This will open a settings window where you should see a microphone icon with a Volume button under it. Click on Volume and set the bar about half way. On Macs you can open system preferences and select Sound. Then select the Input tab and click the mic you use. Adjust the volume with the bar.

6. Why am I getting a “Cannot connect to rserver2031” error?

A: Sometimes if Adobe AIR updates or AIR attempts to open System 44 this error will come up. This is because AIR does not have the coding to know where the media is. To resolve this simply close System 44 (ALT F4 if necessary) and reopen it.
