A letter from the Coaches

Congratulations on deciding to join the 2016 Cross Country Team.

Cross Country is a unique sport because anyone can do it as long as they are committed to putting forth the effort in school and at practice. To be successful, the athlete needs to be at practice every day and complete all the workouts to the best of his/her ability. One of the best aspects about cross country is there are races every week and the runner will be able to see his/her improvement.

If you have not figured it out already, we practice before school at 5:30am on some days and other days after school. The advantages of before school practices are the cool temperatures and the ability for the athletes to be home by 3:30 in the afternoon. The advantages of after school practices, besides sleeping in, are longer practices, training in the mountains, and becoming acclimates to the heat. Your child should be bringing home a weekly practice schedule.

I will send a meet schedule home with all athletes. There are two types of meets. Weekday meets, usually on Wednesdays after school, consisting of a few teams racing at a local park and are more for practice or to determine who will be the top Varsity runners. All athletes compete together in these races in either a boys or girls race. Weekend races, called Invitationals or Invites, usually consist of 20 to 40 teams. These races are where individual medals and team trophies are awarded to the top runners/team. The Top 7 runners will compete in the “Varsity” race. The rest of the runners will compete in the “open” or “JV” race. They can also win medals.

So, what makes a team score? In a race, the top 5 runners from each school have their finishing place added together for a team score. Lowest score wins. So if a school has a runner come in 1st, 2nd, 25th, 50th and 100th they would earn 178 team points. If another school has it’s runners come in 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th then they have a total of 110 points and would win the meet even though the other team had individual runners come in 1st and 2nd. What you need to understand is that EVERY RUNNER COUNTS AND YOUR TEAMMATES ARE RELYING ON YOU!

Well, we are ready for a great season and the coaches are so excited and so proud of the effort that the athletes have put in so far. I promise you that if you commit yourself to practice and your teammates, by the end of the season in November, you will be in the best shape of your life and most importantly you will have become a better person with 40 new friends that will be part of your new Cross Country Family. Good luck and have a great season.
