Transocean response – EarthRights report re Norwegian investments in Burma

25 January 2011

A December 2010 EarthRights report accused the Norwegian Government of complicity in human rights abuses in Burma, through its investments in companies operating in Burma, including Transocean:

· Press release: “Norway Complicit in Human Rights Abuses in Burma – Multi-Billion Dollar Investments Supporting Abuse, Fueling Military Regime”, EarthRights, 15 Dec 2010

· Full report: “Broken Ethics: The Norwegian Government’s Investments in Oil and Gas Companies Operating in Burma (Myanmar)” [PDF], EarthRights, Dec 2010

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Transocean to respond; it provided the following response:

“I wanted to confirm that you know Transocean’s business involves leasing offshore drilling oil rigs to customers around the world. Also, I wanted you to know that we are not leasing any rigs to oil companies in Burma. We have no plans to do so and we have no discussions with any potential customers about leasing our oil rigs to drill in Burma.”
