Third Grade Lesson Plans 9/12/11 – 9/16/11

*Each classroom has modifications made to accommodate those students, for every lesson. Modifications in some classrooms are to make the assignment more rigorous and challenging while other modifications will include reading material to students, alternative assignments, individualized help, shortened assignments, defining vocabulary with students on the board, section questions are discussed NOT assigned, test material is read to the class, and using notes and/or textbook for both formative and summative test.

Standard-RF.3.3
Phonics and decoding words and word recognition.
Learning Target- I can read and figure out what large words are and what they mean.

Monday- “Turtle Bay”

*Vocabulary Power-Read and discuss the vocabulary words with the students. Have students use their phonic skills to decode words and pronounce them. Then I will say the words and have the students repeat the words with me. Students will use the glossary to write a definition for each word. Then the student must come up with a synonym for each word.
*Read the Vocabulary Power passage then ask students to use the text to figure out what they think each vocabulary word means.
* I will have students to read their definition to me, then I will write each on the smart board.
*When finished students begin independently reading the story

Tuesday-“Turtle Bay”

*The students will listen to the story from the audio cd.
*We will read the story and stop at specific places in the story to discuss large words that they may not recognize or understand, important literary elements, devices, details, comprehension, character traits, narrative elements, point of view, main idea or other teachable moments. Throughout the story I will also use several questioning strategies to check for understanding and comprehension from the students.

Wednesday- “Turtle Bay”
*Focus on the above standard at the top of the page.
*Using the smart board I will explain, model, and show examples of the skill that we are focusing on.
*Students will copy notes from board and then provide examples.
*Use the provided practice book to do formative assessments and then correct any mistakes that students have.

Thursday- “Turtle Bay”

* We will use the promethean planet flipchart for the story. The flipchart contains games, short video segments, audio, trivia, diagrams, illustrations, photos, and other high quality educational material for the Harcourt Trophies series stories. The flipcharts are fun, but very core content driven. The flipcharts cover both the vocabulary words and the actual story itself.

Friday- “Turtle Bay”

*Review the vocabulary one last time
*Review the story one last time
*Vocabulary Test
*Reading Comprehension Test
*Remaining time will be used for AR. Students may use the computer lab as needed to take AR test.
