Thesis and Plan of Development
These sentences work together creating the primary focus of most of the essay writing you will do in high school. In order to become adept at creating these vital sentences, you need to practice.
Assignment: For the following five essay topics, pick three topics that most interest you and create both a thesis and plan of development as if you were going to write an essay on that topic.
Purpose: To polish your skills in creating persuasive and well-written thesis statements
Steps for Completion:
1. Pick the three topics that interest you.
2. For each topic, brainstorm a list of ideas that you associate with the topic.
3. Create a thesis statement indicating your stance on the issue.
4. Create a plan of development that details how you will prove your ideas.
Example/
Topic: School Lunches
Thesis: Compared to years past, school lunches exceed expectations and deliver a nutritious meal.
Plan of Development: Healthy options, increased variety of daily choices, and convenience contribute to school lunch’s continuing excellence.
Essay Options:
1. How you feel about being at the high school (excited, nervous, sad , etc)
2. School Issues: Cell Phone use in school, MP3 use in school, Wearing Hats in school, Open Lunch for 9th graders and more. . .
3. Favorite activity/ hobby -- (Explain WHY something is your favorite activity. Why do you love baseball? gaming? music?)
4. Favorite music group / sports team (Why do you think the Cavs rock? Why is Green Day superlative? Why do you think Jazz is the best genre ever?)
