The young continue to choose MARIST life

Following Jesus as Mary did

Numerous Profession ceremonies have taken place throughout the world this November and December. What follows, from Fiji, is a sign of how Marcellin’s charism continues to attract young people and of how being a Marist brother today, anywhere in the world, is such an attainable and rewarding way of life.

Lomeri Professions

Saturday November 24, 2001 was a day of great joy for the eight newly professed.

Five from Bougainville: Alfred Sagolo, Dominic Tsibuen, Cornelius Kelets, and Ken Lasin, all from Buka; and Gerard Epa from Wakunai.

The three others: Elias Warao, from Enga Province in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea; Stanley Maetaoha, from Makira Island in the Solomons; and Fifita Talivaa, from Savaii, Samoa.

It was a particularly happy day for the District of PNG/SI and the Sydney Province, who welcomed 7 professed Brothers, and for the Pacific Region of the New Zealand Province who welcomed Fifita.

The main celebrant of the Profession Mass was Father Bill Irwin, CM. Brother Brendan Neily, District Leader of PNG/SI, and Brother Brian Callaghan, District Leader of Samoa, received their vows. They received their habit and cord from Brother Brian and our special guest of honour Brother Majella Fitzpatrick. The recent increase in vocations from Bougainville has been largely due to Majella’s zeal. Maj has now come to the end of his appointment in PNG and it was fitting that he could play a significant part in the ceremony, which culminates their novitiate.

A very happy and proud Marist Brother was Brother Tim Leen, the Master of Novices, for this group of newly professed was the first one for which he was responsible during their entire novitiate.

Very special guests were Don and Rosemary McBeath from Perth, the parents of the late Brother Nick McBeath, who was Spiritual Director of the novices in 2000.

Our 100th issue of FMS UPDATE

A TOAST TO LIFE

FMS UPDATE first appeared in February 1995. The accelerated rhythm of life and the ever-quickening pace of communications have been challenging us to keep up ever since. It took six months for the brothers in Oceania to receive a letter from Brother François telling them of the death of Marcellin Champagnat… The means at their disposal and their idea of time were quite different from our own. Brother Benito and his Council devised this publication to disseminate breaking news that otherwise would have had to wait for inclusion in FMS Message, Echo, etc.

In more recent times, FMS UPDATE has benefitted from the increased availability of e-mail. It glides along the information highway and reaches the remotest corners of our Marist world. More than simply satisfying our inquisitiveness, it binds our family together in fraternal communion. Some people at the center of many Marist articles view being in the spotlight as a threat to the way they see themselves. But it’s not about commercial publicity. It’s about communicating as a family brought together by St. Marcellin, gathered around our Good Mother, sharing our gifts, concerns, hopes and dreams.

Let’s CHOOSE LIFE… and share it, simply, joyfully. Like Mary did, singing the Magnificat while attending to the needs of her cousin Elizabeth.

Number 70 listed the brother delegates for the 20th General Chapter.

Numbers 72 and 74 focused on the earthquake in El Salvador.

Number 71 included photos for the first time.

Numbers 80 to 98 were devoted entirely to coverage of the 20th General Chapter.

Our Senior Brothers

THEIR FIDELITY SPEAKS VOLUMES

This listing of Marist Brothers 90 years of age and older is our way of paying tribute to all Brothers who are witnessing to choosing life and remaining faithful to their first profession.

The life of prayer of these men, their openness to the Institute’s efforts to forge new paths right now in fidelity to God, and their welcoming and compassionate approach to young people so in need of their personal witness… all are graces that give substance to the words of St. Marcellin: “Our elderly and infirm brothers are the pillars of the Institute.”

Christmas 2001

“I CAME SO THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE LIFE

AND HAVE IT MORE ABUNDANTLY”

Jn 10, 10

Our Chapter’s music, building to a crescendo in the document CHOOSE LIFE, is a fitting subject for this special 100th edition of UPDATE. 100 issues, monitoring the heartbeat of brothers and communities, immersing itself in the ebb and flow of political, social, and economic events…

The birth of our Savior is a message of hope. Crossing the desert, in spiritual terms, is usually God’s way of testing and purifying His people. There is neither productivity nor wealth in the desert. Rather it is a place of process, waiting and confidence from putting God first in our everyday lives. It’s not a question of our own power but of divine strength. This Christmas, filled with hope, we recall the words of Jesus, I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly. We make our own Mary’s questioning, How can this be…? The angel’s response is clear, …Nothing will be impossible for God.

Merry Christmas and Happy 2002!
