Concessions

In persuasive writing or debating, a concession is acknowledging a point that the “other side” has, often preemptively. It is then necessary to point out how your own argument is stronger or where the other side is either mistaken or misinterpreting data. Failure to include concessions may indicate to the reader(s) or audience that the writer is ignorant, dishonest, or writing as if the other side does not exist. It is also important that the writer does not exaggerate or distort the opponent’s view. Furthermore, name-calling or scare tactics are unworthy of competent writers/debaters.

The writer does not have to (nor should they) defend the opposing side, but they should fairly and reasonably state what the opposing argument is, and then—if they can—argue against it with relevant facts.

Example:

Even though it’s been scientifically proven that students learn better when they start class later, the gains are minimal and don’t justify the costs that would be necessary for additional buses. Also, many students who would like to start later also balk at the idea of having to be at school until four in the afternoon or later.
