The Secure Project - Aging Sensitivity

Testimonials

“The Northwest Piedmont Area Agency on Aging in Winston-Salem, North Carolina purchased 2 SECURE Project kits last year. They have been the best investment that we could have made for training purposes. Not only are the kits pure fun to use, but one of the most effective ways to “educate” people about the aging process. We have seen light bulbs, even flood lights, come on when people experience what may occur with normal “aging”. They begin to realize why an older person sometimes fumbles with small change or may hold their head to one side or move it back and forth when tiring to “see”. Our staff has presented this training to direct care worker, gerontology students, medical assistants and our county aging planning boards. Of the many types of training that the Area Agency on Aging does, this one gets the best revues.”

I have been using your Sensitivity kits since 2000 and during that time, I have trained a variety of people including social work students, medical personal, law enforcement, judges, volunteers and a whole host of others.

In Illinois, we have a Family Violence Coordinating Council with representatives from each of the judicial circuits. I am the chair of our Elder Abuse and Training Committees; we have made it our mission to take this training “on the road” to increase the awareness of the vulnerabilities and barriers that many seniors face.

I just wanted to take a moment to share with you how valuable I think your training materials are and how much success we have had with them!

About 8 years ago, I ordered a master kit and began offering Aging Sensitivity Training to all employees attending the monthly Birmingham, VA Medical Center New Employee Orientation. The SECURE project video and kits were the centerpiece of that training. It was such a success, that I was inundated with requests to offer this training in many venues at both the VA Medical Center and the university. I routinely provide this training each year to our: VA Teacher Ambassador: Heroes and Heroines Program; University of Alabama School of Medicine (UASOM) Geriatric Student Interest Group; UASOM Medical Student 4 Scholars Week; UASOM Geriatric Fellow Didactic Training; and UAB School of Health Professions Respiratory Therapy and Health Administration students. When our Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) and in-patient palliative care units opened at University Hospital and at the Birmingham VA Medical Center, I was invited to present this program to their interdisciplinary staff. Our Veterans Integrated Services Network (VISN) has recognized Aging Sensitivity Training as part of “best practices” in training employees about customer service and therefore I have trained other facilitators at six VA hospitals across the Southeast to implement this program. Over the years, your kit and video have reached over 6,000 people through these programs. Thank you for providing a great product and great service to help me meet the demand for this program.
