▉ What was happening during in 2003
in China?
1. The seventh national conference on Diffraction analysis was held in October 30 to November 5, 2003 in Nanning, Guangxi province. There were about 150 specialists on diffraction analysis attending this meeting. They are the lead scientists in this area in China. Drs. Fangling Needham and Ting Huang also attended this meeting. Dr Ting Huang gave his praise for the articles and suggested us to select the top articles and send them to the “Powder Diffraction” journal for publishing. We have recommended 14 articles.
2. I am retired from Nankai University From 2003, I recommended professor Xiaolong Chen, who is an ICDD member too, to substitute me to become the vice Chairman of the Chinese society of Crystallography and the Chairman of Chinese committee on Powder Diffraction. During the Committee meeting in Nanning, Professor Xiaolong Chen was elected as the new Chairman of Chinese committee on Powder Diffraction. He will be elected as the vice Chairman of the Chinese society of Crystallography on the third conference of deputies of Chinese Society of Crystallography, which will be held in Chengdu Sichuan province in September 2004.
Professor Xiaolong Chen got his PhD on Solid State Physics from the Institute of Physics Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991. He has been working there since. It is the top Institute on Physics in China. Professor Chen is a famous scientist in crystal growth and structure analysis in China. He has done many excellent works in the powder diffraction field.
So, I suggest that Professor Xiaolong Chen to be my future successor as the Chairman of ICDD Chinese Regional Committee.
3. During the National meeting ICDD held “the workshop on PDF4 database system and GIA” all day on November 1, 2003. Dr. Needham gave her excellent report on these. Currently there are 14 scholars submitting reference patterns to ICDD every year from China. I believe that in the coming years the applicants of GIA would be more.
4. The third meeting of ICDD Chinese Regional committee was held on November 1, 2003 Drs. Fangling Needham and Ting Huang were invited to attend the meeting. The following questions and topics were discussed in the meeting:
a. How to enlarge the market and protect copy right of PDF Database in China.
b. How to encourage Chinese scholars to apply Grand-in-Aid and help them to get high quality powder data.
c. Recommend the top articles from the meeting to the “Powder Diffraction” journal.
d. Recommend new ICDD members.
e. Recommend new ICDD Chinese regional Co-Chairman. In the third meeting of ICDD Chinese Regional committee, all Chinese members unanimously recommended Professor Xiaolong Chen to be the new Chairman of Chinese Regional committee.

▉ The plans for future years
1. The third conference of deputies of Chinese Society of Crystallography will be held in Chengdu Sichuan province in September 2004.
2. During the above conference, Chinese committee meeting on Powder Diffraction will also be held to decide the time and the place of the next national conference on Diffraction Analysis. I guess it would be in 2006.
