Comic Strip Assignment
To keep The Old Man and the Sea fresh in your brain over break, you will be asked to complete the following, fun-filled assignment!
Explanation: Fictional texts follow a basic pattern called the plot. Each portion of the plot denotes specific action within the story. A story’s plot is the sequence of events that happen in a story. The plot usually occurs around a conflict or struggle between opposite forces. Most plots contain the following elements:
· exposition‐where an author gives a reader background information about a character, the setting, or the conflicts that are happening or will happen
· rising action‐events or actions that begin to build suspense or interest for the reader and make a conflict more complicated and harder to solve
· climax‐the “turning point” of a story where the action reaches the highest point in the story
· falling action‐where the author begins to wind down the actions and conflicts
· resolution‐how the author ends the story and ties up the loose ends for the reader
The assignment: You will be developing a comic strip based on the plot of The Old Man and the Sea. Your comic strip should contain 6 boxes in total. The first box should contain a TITLE or INTRO to your comic strip. Each box following should contain one of the plot elements mentioned above. Your comic strip should include both quotes and drawings that help you to describe the specific plot elements from the novella. It should be completed on standard 8x11 paper (but can be made on bigger poster-board if you desire). BE CREATIVE, COLORFUL, ORIGINAL, AND USE THE STORY!!!
