U.S. History—Unit 3

The New South, Economic Progress, Immigration, the West, and the Industrial Revolution: Students will analyze the events surrounding the post-Civil War economy and shifting culture. Key questions will examine how the industrial revolution impacted the economic, political, and social fabric (Gilded Age, Populism, and Native Indians). Progressive reforms and conservative reactions will also be discussed.

5. Team Magazine project—“The Bridge”

· Students are to be divided into teams of 3-4. Each team will construct a magazine that represents the current era being studied—post Reconstruction.

· Each magazine will use Power Point format and must include:

o Front and Back cover

o Table of contents

o 3-4 quarter-page advertisements typical of the time period and themes

o 3-4 full-page essay/articles on each of the following—immigration, industrial working conditions, the wild west

o 3-4 half-page articles on any of the snapshot biographies with pictures

o 3-4 half-page government announcements key laws, legislation

o 3-4 half-page exposes on atrocities—lynchings/ race crimes, Indian massacres, industrial accidents/wrongdoings

o A map

o Quarter page items-- A quote (fictional or real) with pictures that represent the lives of the following people—miner, farmer, politician, railroad worker, cowboy, African American writer, industrialist, Chinese immigrant, inventor, union activist, Populist, female prohibitionist

· Know the effects of industrialization on living and working conditions, including the portrayal of working conditions and food safety in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle.

· Describe the changing landscape, including the growth of cities linked by industry and trade, and the development of cities divided according to race, ethnicity, and class.

· Trace the effect of the Americanization movement.

· Discuss corporate mergers that produced trusts and cartels and the economic and political policies of industrial leaders.

· Trace the economic development of the United States and its emergence as a major industrial power, including its gains from trade and the advantages of its physical geography.
