THE HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTS AND CONVERTS

THESIS: HOLY SPIRIT IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL WEAPONS IN OUR WARFARE AGAINST THE TEMPTATIONS OF SATAN.

WORK OF THE H.S. SUMMARIZED BY PAUL:

A. LIVING BIBLE, 1 COR. 12:

4. Now God gives us many kinds of special abilities, but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the source of them all. 5 There are different kinds of service to God, but it is the same Lord we are serving. 6 There are many ways in which God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the work in and through all of us who are his. 7 The Holy Spirit displays God’s power through each of us as a means of helping the entire church.

8 To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; someone else may be especially good at studying and teaching, and this is his gift from the same Spirit. 9 He gives special faith to another, and to someone else the power to heal the sick. 10 He gives power for doing miracles to some, and to others power to prophesy and preach. He gives someone else the power to know whether evil spirits are speaking through those who claim to be giving God’s messages—or whether it is really the Spirit of God who is speaking. Still another person is able to speak in languages he never learned; and others, who do not know the language either, are given power to understand what he is saying. 11 It is the same and only Holy Spirit who gives all these gifts and powers, deciding which each one of us should have. (CONFIRMED IN ACTS 2:6, DISCIPLES PREACHED IN GREEK, BUT PEOPLE WHO WERE THERE FROM MANY NATIONS HEARD IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE.)

12 Our bodies have many parts, but the many parts make up only one body when they are all put together. So it is with the “body” of Christ. 13 Each of us is a part of the one body of Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But the Holy Spirit has fitted us all together into one body. We have been baptized into Christ’s body by the one Spirit, and have all been given that same HOLY SPIRIT.

I. THE H.S. WAS CENTRAL TO THE MINISTRY OF CHRIST AND HIS VICTORIES OVER THE TEMPTATIONS OF SATAN:

THE TRINITY CONVERGES AT JESUS’ BAPTISM:

A. John Baptizes Jesus:

B. MATT. : 3:

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”

15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.

16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He[c] saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

II. MATT. 4: 1-11: LAST WEEK WE STUDIED HOW THE HOLY SPIRIT GUIDED AND DIRECTED CHRIST AS HE WAS

TEMPTED BY SATAN IN THE WILDERNESS.

III. CAN WE KNOW IF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS FILLING US WITH HIS SPIRITUAL POWER?

IV. GAL. 5:

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith,[b] 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit. 26 Let’s not become conceited, provoking one another, and envying one another.

JOHN 16:8- HOLY SPIRIT BRINTS CONVICTION.

V. LUKE 15: 11-32- PRODIGAL (LOST) SON: Luke 15:11-32

Living Bible (TLB)

11 To further illustrate the point, he told them this story: “A man had two sons. 12 When the younger told his father, ‘I want my share of your estate now, instead of waiting until you die!’ his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons.

13 “A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and took a trip to a distant land, and there wasted all his money on parties and prostitutes. 14 About the time his money was gone a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. 15 He persuaded a local farmer to hire him to feed his pigs. 16 The boy became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the swine looked good to him. And no one gave him anything.

17 “When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired men have food enough and to spare, and here I am, dying of hunger! 18 I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, 19 and am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired man.”’

20 “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long distance away, his father saw him coming, and was filled with loving pity and ran and embraced him and kissed him.

21 “His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and you, and am not worthy of being called your son—’

22 “But his father said to the slaves, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. And a jeweled ring for his finger; and shoes! 23 And kill the calf we have in the fattening pen. We must celebrate with a feast, 24 for this son of mine was dead and has returned to life. He was lost and is found.’ So the party began.

25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the fields working; when he returned home, he heard dance music coming from the house, 26 and he asked one of the servants what was going on.

27 “‘Your brother is back,’ he was told, ‘and your father has killed the calf we were fattening and has prepared a great feast to celebrate his coming home again unharmed.’

28 “The older brother was angry and wouldn’t go in. His father came out and begged him, 29 but he replied, ‘All these years I’ve worked hard for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to; and in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends. 30 Yet when this son of yours comes back after spending your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the finest calf we have on the place.’

31 “‘Look, dear son,’ his father said to him, ‘you and I are very close, and everything I have is yours. 32 But it is right to celebrate. For he is your brother; and he was dead and has come back to life! He was lost and is found!’”

VI. FATHER AND YOUNGER SON DEMONSTRATE FRUITS OF SPIRIT:

A. GAL. 5:- But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith,[b] 23 gentleness, and self-control. (FATHER SHOWED CONVERSION, LOVE.)

B. CONVICTION, CONFESSION, CONVERSION- WAYWARD SON GOES THROUGH THESE THREE STEPS. SO MUST WE.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 Living Bible (TLB)

3 You may as well know this too, Timothy, that in the last days it is going to be very difficult to be a Christian. 2 For people will love only themselves and their money; they will be proud and boastful, sneering at God, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful to them, and thoroughly bad. 3 They will be hardheaded and never give in to others; they will be constant liars and troublemakers and will think nothing of immorality. They will be rough and cruel, and sneer at those who try to be good. 4 They will betray their friends; they will be hotheaded, puffed up with pride, and prefer good times to worshiping God. 5 They will go to church,[a] yes, but they won’t really believe anything they hear. Don’t be taken in by people like that (OLDER SON LACKED CONVERSION, LOVE.)

4. MARK 10: 17-27- OLDER SON LIKE RICH YOUNG RULER- BOTH NEEDED CONVERSION FROM FOCUSING ON THINGS TO FOCUSING ON ETERNAL LIFE.

Acts 2:38 - Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
