The Happy Sheet

September 2014

Wind Down Wednesdays

September 3, 10, and 17 6:00 pm - Sunset

We’ve had a great summer of evening sails but these are the last weekday evening group sails of the season. Aim for 6:00 at the dock for boat prep and leave promptly at 6:15, so we can sail more in daylight than darkness. The September 17th sail will be on the “big water”. Certified sailing members only.

Big Water Delivery Sails!

September 14 and 27 10 am to about 4 pm depending on weather

As the prime sponsor of the Outback Regatta, Wilana's owner needs her at the dam end of the lake for the weekend of September 20. Let us know if you wish to be involved with the delivery and we will get carpools together. (Sorry but our insurance prevents us from racing boats in competition, so we don't enter the regattas).

Dam Sunset Sail

Friday, September 26 7-10 pm

Enjoy the sunset on the wide expanse of the big water …. We might not have to tack or jibe very often! What will we do with our time? Member and guest event.

Charleston Social Sail

October 24-26

Brian is privately chartering a 39 ft. sailboat with 3 double cabins in Charleston for the weekend of October 24-26. A rough itinerary might be to arrive Friday evening and load up the boat and have dinner at a restaurant. On Saturday sail the harbor and up past the Ravenel Bridge. Back to the marina for dinner in Charleston. On Sunday sail out of the jetties to see the ocean and then back to the marina around 4:00 to clean up and be good for the drive to Columbia. The exact itinerary will depend on weather and tides. Obviously feel free to drive down early on Saturday instead of Friday, but we would plan to leave the dock around 9:30-10:00. An estimate of cost is approximately $250-$300 per person,

not including food and fuel. If you want a cabin to yourself it'll cost you double! Although this is not an official (insured) club sail, out of courtesy it is being offered to club members first. After September 20, 2014 it will open up to former club members and other friends. A deposit has already been paid so a down payment of $100 cash or check to Brian will be needed to keep your spot. If you have any questions give Brian a call.

Update: We have enough interest to fill the boat. If more are interested there is the chance of a second boat, but somebody with Bareboat Charter Certification (104) would have to volunteer to be skipper. Contact Brian for more information on that.

Pre-Cruise Social

Tuesday, October 7 6:30 pm Bulldog Pub in Harbison

All are welcome to enjoy a casual social evening of pre-cruise banter, chart checking, and provision list making. Anybody that has taken 103/104 is asked to bring the

pre-trip/provisioning check list you were given.

Movie Night on Wilana

October 16 7:00 pm

As the sun is already setting at or before 8:00, our weekly weekday evening sails are coming to an end for the year. What can we do to replace them? Monthly Movie Night on Wilana! Our first one will be Thursday, October 16, 7:00 set up and make the popcorn, 7:30 screening. We will take advantage of Wilana’s TV for the screening. Member and guest event. October’s Happy Sheet will have a list of possible movies.

Tip of the Month

At the end of your sail leave the cover of the main and the halyard attached until you are tied to the dock. That way if the engine dies or you wrap line around your prop you can go back to sail power fairly quickly. Using your main will ensure you have weather helm and make it easier to tack.
