The Fifth Southern Africa Fire Network (SAFNet) Workshop: "Towards Meeting Fire Management Challenges in Southern Africa" will be held in Mangochi Malawi, 9th - to 13th August 2004. The workshop will contribute towards the UNEP/DEWA Africa Environmental Outlook Report II process and will focus on the following sub-themes:
· Fires and their impacts on the environment and human vulnerability
· Fire management and monitoring at community to regional levels
– Monitoring and managing fire at the community level
– National to regional fire monitoring and management
– Operational fire monitoring and management
· Policy responses/decision making and institutional frameworks
· Acceptable and accessible geo-spatial fire information products
· Ongoing assessment of current capabilities and activities including geo-spatial fire products
· Capacity building and training
All those planning to attend should submit a completed registration form by 15 July 2004. If you wish to make a presentation on any of the sub-themes forward the title of your presentation and a brief abstract, up to 250 words, to Pauline Dube, University of Botswana () or Joseph Kanyanga, Zambia Meteorology () by 15th July 2004. Focused training sessions on specific aspects of fire are also welcome.
