Volleyball

1. The server serves the ball from behind the baseline

2. Each point begins with a serve

3. The net cannot be touched by any player at anytime during the game

4. In a regulation high school, college, or international competition, there are only 6 players per team.

6. a regulation game is played to 25 points and you must win by 2 points

Volleyball History and Facts

1. Volleyball began in the Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1895

2. William Morgan took elements of the sports of tennis, basketball, baseball, and handball to create what became volleyball.

3. Volleyball was first played in the Olympic Games in 1964.

4. Doubles Beach Volleyball was first competed in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

5. Karch Kiraly, from the United States, is arguably the greatest player ever. He won gold medals in the 1984, 1988, and 1996 Olympic Games.

6. Logan Tom is one of the most famous women’s volleyball players.

Basketball

1. There are 5 players per team in basketball

2. If a player stops his dribble then starts dribbling again, it is considered double dribbling.

3. A regulation basketball court is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide.

4. The free throw line is 15 feet from the backboard.

5. A player may score 3 ways:

1 point- a free throw

2 points- a field goal from inside the 3 point line

3 points- a field goal made from outside the 3 point line

6. The 3 point line, is an arc measured from the middle of the rim at different distances, depending on the level of competition.

7. A player cannot play anymore if he/she has 5 fouls in high school/college and 6 fouls in the NBA

8. A regulation high school is 32 minutes long, college is 40 minutes long, and a professional game is 48 minutes long.

Basketball History and Facts

1. Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield MA. in 1891.

2. He created basketball as an “athletic distraction” for rowdy classes in the harsh winters.

3. Basketball became an Olympic sport in 1936 in Berlin, Germany.

4. The United States won the first Gold Medal defeating Canada, 19-8.

5. The longest winning streak in college was 88 games by UCLA in the early ‘70’s.

6. The longest winning streak in the NBA was 33 games by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1971-72.

7. Michael Jordan is arguably the greatest basketball players ever. He lead the Chicago Bulls to 6 championships in the 1990’s. He was the MVP in all six seasons.

8. The Boston Celtics won 8 consecutive championships from 1958-59 until1965-66.

9. UCLA won 10 of 12 NCAA championships from 1964 to 1975. They did not play in the final game in 1966 and 1974.
