Introduction:

The Islamic Empire began its expansion during the seventh century C.E. At the height of its imperial power, the Islamic empire spanned across three continents and was nearly double the size of the old Roman Empire. With the empire’s ability to spread Islam and partially adapt to its conquered cultures, the Islamic Empire was able to diffuse (spread) ideologies and technologies throughout most of the known world. As a result, parts of Asia, Africa, and Europe experienced a cultural flowering that will later influence other intellectual movements, like the Renaissance. Many of those thoughts and tools still influence culture to this day. Students will be tasked with identifying and tracking the different ideas and technologies that spread as result of the Islamic Empire on a Bing Map, in order to better understand how information moves and its impact on the world.

Tasks:

Students will complete the following activities in preparation for their final presentation.

1. Using devices, research and create a list of the technologies and ideas that

diffused out of the Islamic Empire.

a. Open OneNote on your Windows device

b. Create a new notebook called Islamic Technology

c. Share the notebook with your group and your teacher by clicking “File,” “Share” and inputting their names

d. Students should create a list of at least 10 examples.

e. Each example should have an explanation of why that item is important.

2. Open the Bing App on your Windows device

a. Click the link to review steps on how to create a Bing map. http://onlinehelp.microsoft.com/en-us/bing/ff524481.aspx

b. Sign into Microsoft account and click on Maps

c. Click My places and begin creating your group map.

3. Create a Bing map highlighting the spread of technologies and ideas. Use

notes from research to complete the following tasks.

a. Map must include:

i. Pins where the idea or technology started

ii. In the pin’s description include time period and the importance of the technology,

iii. Use the line tool to draw lines where the technologies diffused to.

4. Present your Bing Map and explain why they chose specific technologies

and/or ideas.

a. Students sitting at their desks should:

I. Open project notebook

II. Create new tab called “Presentation Notes”

III. Make notes of information presented in other group projects

5. When all presentations are done go back to OneNote and create new tab in project notebook.

a. Label new tab Follow-up Questions.

b. Copy and answer the following questions in the project notebook.

1. What items originated within the Islamic Empire?

2. What items moved the farthest?

3. Which item do you believe had the biggest impact?

4. How would some of the ideas that spread impact other civilizations?

6. After all the presentations the class will discuss the similarities and differences

on the presented Bing maps.

a. You will try to answer verbally the following questions:

i. Why do some technologies diffuse more quickly than others?

ii. What are some are positive and negative effects of cultural

diffusion?

Final Presentation:

Groups should present their maps to the rest of the class.

The presentations should include all the information correlated to their research from the beginning of the project.

Some findings may overlap, but many groups will have different items to focus on.

Students sitting at their desks should:

· Open project notebook

· Create new tab called “Presentation Notes”

· Make notes of information presented in other group projects

Follow-up Activities:

Students will present their information to the class. Audience will take notes, completing the information on the attached chart.

After listening to the map presentations, students will then complete the follow-up questions.

Students will also participate in the class discussion about the similarities and difference in maps. Through discussion, students will attempt to answer the question on why some technologies diffuse faster than others.
