Dear Parents, Students, and Teachers,

Taylorsville Elementary School has a proud history of academic and athletic excellence. The young people who play or cheer are considered to be representatives of this longstanding tradition, and we maintain high expectations for our student athletes. Representing our school is a privilege….not a right.

Our position has always been that school and academics come first, so we expect our student athletes to maintain their grades at or above a C-. School attendance is also very important, as we work hard to achieve our 98% goal. We also expect our students to demonstrate the lifeskill of effort in his /her studies and in his/her conduct in order to earn the privilege of participation.

Elimination from a night of play is an emotional experience for all. We must all work together to avoid as many disciplinary situations as possible. It should be clear, though, that if suspension of a game is deemed in the best interest of the student, suspension will be imposed.

The following procedure will be used:

1. Teacher contact

If a basketball player, cheerleader, or mascot is not putting forth the effort in conduct, attendance, or academics during the course of the week, the teacher will contact the parent as soon as possible, via phone, note, or in-person conference. It is important that the student, parent, and coach recognize the need for improvement and help in the process. Parents can also keep up with student progress by using Parent Portal.

2. Eligibility Sheet Completion

If improvement is not made towards this expressed concern, teachers will complete the eligibility sheet each Friday and place it in my mailbox. An eligibility sheet will only be completed if it is felt strongly that a student should be suspended from the next game.

3. Principal Conference

Upon review of the eligibility sheet, I will inform the student of the rating. A copy of the eligibility sheet will be given to the student to share with the parent. The suspension will be imposed. Students who have been suspended will be expected to practice, dress for the game, and sit on the bench. Should a student receive three eligibility sheets, the suspension will become immediately effective for the remainder of the season.

As mentioned above, school attendance is very important, so student athlete attendance will be closely monitored. If a student athlete is sent home for any reason, the student athlete will not participate in any evening events (game or practice). Students must attend school at least ? day to participate in the evening, which means the student athlete must arrive prior to 11:30 a.m.

Each student has worked hard to earn the opportunity to participate in the various athletic activities at Taylorsville Elementary School. Parents and teachers provide a great deal of support in multiple ways. It is the responsibility of all involved to support our school goals of being safe, responsible, and respectful. By working together, our season will be a great one!

Sincerely,

Sydell Gant

Principal
