EAP 1141-L - Writing Level 1Course Competencies:
Course Description:Students develop the ability to write appropriate phrases and short sentences on personal topics. This course supports the same competencies as those in EAP 1141.3 credits
Prerequisites: Students place into this class after receiving an appropriate score on the Michigan .
Co-requisite: EAP 1141
Competencies:
Competency 1: The student will produce basic sentences and phrases on personal topics in order to develop writing fluency and vocabulary.Competency 2: The student will write simple sentences appropriate to the level in Standard English and attend to grammatical form and word order.
Competency 3:The student will proofread and edit grammar and sentence structure appropriate to the level.
Competency 4: The student will use appropriate reference tools to edit writing.

Course Requirements:
Note: Writing labs are considered double-contact, which means that the same number of class hours (48) should also be required in outside writing activities.
Attendance Policy: You should come to every class in order to obtain the most complete educational experience. Participation in this class is only possible if you attend class.
Absences: Students may be absent from one class with no penalties. Students who are absent ____ times will see their final grade lowered by one letter grade. Students who are absent ____ times will see their final grade lowered by two letter grades. Students who are absent ____ or more times will be asked to drop the class, or the instructor will drop them or assign a grade of “F”.

Students continue to develop writing skills in the context of guided discourse on personal topics with an emphasis on logical thought and mechanics. This class supports the same competencies which are covered in EAP 1241.
3 credits
Prerequisites: Successful completion of EAP 1141-L or equivalent proficiency as determined by placement in Michigan.

Students develop the ability to write basic, structured academic paragraphs on familiar topics and execute other academic writing tasks. This course supports the same competencies as those in EAP 1341.3 credits
Prerequisites: Successful completion of EAP 1241-L or equivalent proficiency
Co-requisite: EAP 1341
Competencies:
Competency 1: The student will produce basic, structured, academic/expository paragraphs on familiar topics (e.g., narrative, descriptive, definition, process) in order to develop writing fluency and vocabulary.Competency 2: The student will write basic single paragraphs using simple, compound, and complex sentences (with high frequency transition words) when appropriate. The paragraphs will be organized and written with clarity, substance, and Standard English appropriate to the level.
Competency 3:The student will proofread and edit grammar and sentence structure appropriate to the level.
Competency 4: The student will use appropriate reference tools to edit writing.
Competency 5: The student will use the basic functions of the computer as a word processing tool.
Competency 6: The student will execute other academic writing tasks including: factual short answer responses to test questions, brief outlines of text, brief formal definitions of academic terms, and e-mail.

Course Requirements: In addition to your class time, you are required to go to the lab and work through the software program of One Step at a Time, 1. You should bring a disk with you to save your work, which you will hand in at regular intervals.
