Thank you for your interest in working for Thames21, please take a few moments to read through this general information which will give you a brief overview of Thames21 and offer you some general advice as to how to fill out the application form.

Thames21

Thames21 is the leading voice for London’s waterways. We work hand in hand with communities to improve rivers, canals and ponds for social and environmental benefit through: practical, educational and awareness-raising projects. Our army of volunteers enhance protect and fight for the capitals’ wide network of waterways, which provide vital habitat for wildlife and much needed green space in one of the most densely populated cities in Europe.

Once connected to the river, community interests often develop into a wide range of further activities such as wildlife habitat creation, riverside planting, and art and education programmes. Restorative ecology is also something Thames21 gets involved in, primarily on the tributaries of the tidal section of the Thames. This often takes the form of habitat restoration, including: constructing improvements to river banks, planting aquatic plants on these improvements to benefit fish and macro-invertebrates, and building dead-hedges to benefit nesting birds, to name but a few.

Initially established as a research project in 1994, Thames21 became an independent registered charity in 2004. Thames21’s Board of Trustees includes representatives from Thames Water, the Environment Agency and the Port of London Authority. The Charity continues to expand developing projects and programmes and today has nearly 10,000 volunteers on waterways across London.

At present Thames21 has 23 staff members, some of whom are based in our main office close to Cannon Street Station, others are based in our Bow Lock Office, in the heart of East London, while others are home based and work in the heart of local communities.

We have a range of different community projects across London, from rubbish collecting on river banks with volunteers, to Citizen Science e projects where members of the public are helping us to gather valuable data about the health of the Thames. We are also working hard to establish sustainable drainage systems across London, which will contribute towards alleviating flooding and improving the water quality across London’s 400 miles of waterways.

Thames21 also has a strong voice within the many Catchments Partnerships that are being established across London, and is involved with campaigns such as Break The Bag Habit, we further work to stimulate European wide research on plastic litter.

Thames21 draws its funding from a spectrum of supporters, large charitable trusts, Government bodies, Companies, local businesses, as well as members of the public who are keen to support our work.
