Seven Steps to Good Study Habits, Part One
Part One of this comprehensive “how to” study skills program teaches four critical study skills: (1) how to develop a positive attitude about schoolwork and homework, (2) how to form a cooperative "learning partnership" with teachers, (3) how to set up a special "learning place," for productive study and (4) how to make (and follow) a study schedule. On-Line Research Techniques
In clear, non-technical language, this program shows how to find what's needed for a report, term paper, or other class project. A special feature shows how to construct a search strategy before going on-line, thereby saving both time and phone charges. Tips include using Internet directories and other off-line media, and how to find and quickly use search engines. In addition, the video warns students about viruses and tells how to prevent virus infection when downlaoding data. Other cautionary tips include how to avoid unnecessary and time-consuming "surfing," as well as never giving one's full name, address, and phone number when posting messages on a newsgroup. Students learn how to find appropriate newsgroups for their projects, and how to correspond with experts from around the world via e-mail. (Grade 6 - 8) hide <<

Testwise: The Smart Way to Prepare For and Take Tests
Why are some students better test-takers than others? Is it in the preparation, or are there tricks test-takers can use to push up their scores? As this program shows, it's both. Preparation, as the video explains, is a major factor. Preparation means keeping up with one's assignments and making certain the material is understood well in advance of the test. It also means having a suitable place to study, a reasonable study schedule, and a good strategy for reviewing material. Also important are knowing when the teacher is presenting test material in class, and understanding what the teacher's goals are. Knowing what kind of test the teacher is likely to give can be another helpful factor. Pneumonic devices, lists, memory joggers, flash cards, sleep schedules, and what to eat on test day are also covered, as is working effectively in study groups.

Learning About Ethics and Values
Top of Form
School used to be a place where students learned reading, writing, and arithmetic. With today's problems of drugs and violence, though, school has become a dangerous place. This program enhances Guidance, Life Skills, and Social Studies units on values and self esteem, leadership Skills, goal-setting and drop-out prevention, and citizenship. Host Tom Selleck shows how some schools are taking an active role in helping kids find different ways to deal with bad situations. School-sponsored programs such as "Law Related Education," and "The Just Community," give students the chance to govern themselves by creating and enforcing their own rules. Other programs teach students self-confidence, role playing, conflict resolution, and discipline. These programs are successfully instilling a sense of responsibility and self-respect in students at risk. Executive Producer: Arnold Shapiro. Written, Produced and Directed by Carol L. Fleisher.
