Strengthening environmental NGOs in Burma/Myanmar
Villagers in a beneficiary location
Source: Oikos
Country: Myanmar
Action: Environmental education and Democratic participation
Context:
While being a very rich country in natural resources, Myanmar is facing problems like poverty and malnutrition as repercussions of the misuse of land and marine resources. Logging, extensive and unsustainable touristic and fishing industries and deforestation have generated biodiversity devastation and as a consequence a decrease in the population’s living conditions. At the same time, the institutional framework for environmental protection is very weak. A few NGOs have erupted to deal with these challenges, but their lack of capacity and knowledge on the country’s natural resources scenario has limited their scope of action. This project seeks to reverse this situation by reinforcing their role in environmental conservation and sustainable development activities.
Objectives:
· To empower NSAs in Myanmar to participate in sustainable environmental development strategies
· To strengthen BANCA to plan and manage biodiversity conservation projects
Expected results:
· BANCA has technical and management capacity to coordinate projects and collaborate with public institutions
· Data collected, organised and analysed on the status of biodiversity resources in Myanmar
· Network established, as a space for exchanges involving local and international NGOs, grass-root organisations, protected area managers and academic institutions
