This document is a step-by-step guide on how to set up an ATI VPN (virtual private network) connection (used to access ATI servers over a high-speed connection such as cable or DSL from home) on a computer running Windows 7.

Note: As one of security measures, during a VPN session, your Internet is blocked, except St. Lawrence College web sites. To restore the Internet access, you need to disconnect the VPN.

PART 1: Create ATI VPN connection

1. If you installed a third party firewall or Internet security (not Windows 7 build-in firewall) on your computer, for example, Norton Internet Security, ZoneAlarm firewall, etc. you may need to add a rule that allows from and to 142.155.128.0 / 255.255.254.0 or IP range: 142.155.128.0 – 142.155.129.255.

2. To setup an ATI VPN connection, go to Control Panel


3. If the view is organized by “Category”, then click View network status and tasks. If by “Samll icons”, then click Network and Sharing Center. (See the two screen shots below)



4. Click Set up a new connection or network.

5. Select option Connect to a workplace and click Next.

6. Click Use my Internet connection (VPN).

7. Enter the Internet address: 142.155.1.129 and Destination name: ATI VPN connection. Check the third option Don’t connect now; just set it up so I can connect later. click Next.

8. Type your short format of ATI user name, for example, stester, and password. Check the option Remember this password. Click Create.

9. Click Close.

10. To configure the VPN type, go back to Network and Sharing Center, click Change adapter settings in the left pane.

11. Right click on ATI VPN Connection, and then click Properties in the pop up list.

12. On the Security tab, change the Type of VPN from Automatic to Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), and then click on the OK to close the Properties window.

13. To create a shortcut on desktop, right click on ATI VPN Connection, and then click Create Shortcut in the pop up list.

14. Click Yes to place shortcut on the desktop.



PART 2: Connect to ATI VPN connection and ATI servers

1. Double click the shortcut ATI VPN connection on the desktop.

2. Click Connect button.

Note:
1. your user name should be short format of ATI user account name, for example, stester.
2. Do not use your SL user name to connect ATI VPN, and vice versa.
3. You do not need to type your password again if the option Save this user name and password for the following users: checked.


3. Click Close after the VPN connected successfully.


4. To access ATI servers such as ATI2 or ATI8, open Computer window.

5. Click on Network icon in the left pane, then in the address bar, type the complete ATI server path in this format, for example server ATI2, \\ati2.ati.sl.on.ca and press Enter. Depending on your Internet connection speed, it would take seconds or up to half minute for you to get user name and password window pops up.


6. Depending on your Windows 7 version, if you get this window, click Use another account.


If you get the window below, go to the next step.


7. Must type your full user name in the format of , for example, .
Then enter your ATI password , check the option Remember my credentials if you want, then click OK.
Depends on your ISP speed, it might take several seconds when you gain access to the server.



8. Your Z: drive path -
for student user: \\ati8.ati.sl.on.ca\Students\
for staff user: \\ati8.ati.sl.on.ca\staff\

9. Note: As a remote access, it would be dramatically slow if you directly double-click to open a file on the server. We strongly recommend you to copy the file(s) to the local hard drive of your home computer and upload it back to server after you are finished your work.

10. To disconnect, double click shortcut ATI VPN connection on the desktop. Click Disconnect button.
