Sports newsletter summer 2015
The children have been very busy since Easter and have enjoyed playing Cricket and Tennis in their lessons.
Sussex Schools Swimming Gala
Our relay team of 4 children, Isabelle Greenslade, Harry Lumsden, Anneli Belfield and Emily Shapton all went to Guildford to compete in the regional finals having qualified from the county finals. This was an amazing experience for them and a great achievement of which they should be very proud.
Football
We have taken part in several tournaments held at Withyham and on more than occasion we have been able to take 2 teams giving everyone who wanted to, a chance to play in a match. We had some excellent results and the following boys should be congratulated on their performances – Matthew Summers, Ruairi Cummings, Fletcher Marsh, Ned Hayes and Harry Lumsden. The following girls showed huge improvement – Isabelle Greenslade, M. Jeal and India Turner.
I nominated two boys to enter district trials for Football which were held in Eastbourne recently. Ruairi Cummings and Matthew Summers should be congratulated on their achievement so far and we wait to hear the final results.
Tag Rugby
The TWRFC festival was held in May and in cold and windy conditions. The children behaved really well and played brilliantly. The A team won their pool winning all 3 games, putting them into the cup quarter final which they lost gallantly to a very good St Augustine’s A side. Everyone played well but a special mention goes to Isabelle Greenslade Molly Brignell and Ruairi Cummings.
The B team came 4th in their pool with 2 draws and a defeat, and went into the shield competition. They just got better and better, winning the quarters, semis and eventually the final against Bishops Down. By the end they were playing proper rugby, with everyone involved and engaged. Special mention goes to Mia Gray, India Turner and M. Jeal for good play and to Harry Lumsden for loads of tries!!!
We were invited to St. Barnabus School for some training and match play in warmer conditions and 7 children represented Frant – Matthew Summers, Max Champneys, Fletcher Marsh, Isabelle Greenslade, M. Jeal, India Turner and Molly Brignell. We had a great afternoon and the children won 6 out of their 7 matches.
Cricket
I have run the girls’ cricket club this term and for those who were not doing Football, Netball, or Pottery, progress has been good.
We have also enjoyed the coaching skills of Trevor Vousden from Borderers’ Cricket Club, during lessons for both Hazel class and Oak class. We are lucky enough to have 2 strong clubs very close to us at Bells Yew Green and Borderers Cricket Club at St. Marks Ground Tunbridge Wells. They have strong youth sections and it would be so beneficial for the children to get some outside coaching and matches. It is a really fun game and very inclusive.
Girls’ Tournament at Bells Yew Green
We entered the tournament for girls at BYGCC and came 2nd in our group. This put us through to the semi-finals which we won but then lost in the finals, coming 2nd overall in the small schools section. Congratulations to Emily Shapton, Tabbitha Elliott, Anneli Belfield, M. Jeal, Isabelle Greenslade and Scarlett Brickell.
Girls’ Cricket Tournament at Buxted
Competing were Isabelle Greenslade, M. Jeal, Tabbitha Elliott, Anneli Belfield, Emily Shapton, Alice Ashby, Hollie Tempero, Elsie Miller, Scarlett Brickell and Heidi Shapton.
The girls won matches against Stonegate and Manor but lost to Mayfield and Newick coming joint 2nd in their group, narrowly missing going through to the final on run rate.
All the girls improved immensley and Tabitha Elliott was a superb captain. M. Jeal had the highest number of wickets and Isabelle Greenslade was an excellent wicket keeper
Year 6 open Cricket Tournament– Buxted
Frant got through to the semi-finals which placed them in the top 4 out of 12 teams. Unfortunately they then lost the semis and the play off for 3rd/4th Place, but the competition was high and 4th out of 12 was a fantastic result.
Player of the tournament goes to Ruairi Cummings and Harry Lumsden.
Jesse Scully, Matthew Summers, Max Champneys, Henry Shaw, Ned Hayes, Isabelle Greenslade and Tabitha Elliott were all in the squad.
Year 4/5 mixed Cricket Tournament at Buxted
In this competition the team had to consist of 4 boys and 4 girls. Some of the girls had hardly played at all so coming 2nd in their group was quite an achievement. There was a good team spirit and everyone improved but special mention goes to Hollie Tempero, India Turner and Thomas McDonald for improved fielding skills.
Player of the tournament was Jesse Scully who consistently bowled well, scored highly in the batting and took 2 catches. Also in the squad were Ruairi Cummings, Ned Hayes, Matthew Summers, Ned Elliott, Molly Macintyre and Sophie Lumsden.
Quadkids Athletics
Frant entered a team which had to consist of 4 boys and 4 girls. Everyone took part in 4 events and scored points for their achievements. The points were added up and the schools ranked accordingly. There were some large schools there and 48 athletes took part. The following children represented Frant : Ruairi Cummings, Max Champneys, Harry Lumsden, Henry Shaw, Isabelle Greenslade, Anneli Belfield, M. Jeal and Emily Shapton.
Whilst we did not come anywhere as a school, Harry Lumsden came 13th overall and Ruairi Cummings came 14th which was an excellent achievement.
The Writing and Dance Day
The children all took part in the writing and dance day which was a huge success. Everyone listened to the same piece of music and used it as a stimulus for writing a poem, which we then used as a stimulus for a dance. We had some fantastic poems and some really good ideas. The children behaved impeccably and each class produced a 4 minute long dance in a 45 minute session which they then shared with each other.
New Kit
The year 6 parents and the PTFA have kindly bought the school 20 training tops which go over the childrens’ PE kit for use in tournaments and competitions. We are very grateful to them and look forward to wearing them next year. The school have also purchased new shorts and skorts for the children to wear when competing in competitions which are infinitely smarter than the current team kit as you can see in the photo!
On the subject of kit – If you are buying new shoes for sport, please do NOT buy plimsoles as they do not support the foot properly for sport outside, on grass or hard court. They do not need them inside as Gymnastics and dance require bare feet, so please buy trainers. You can get velcro fastenings on trainers if you are worried about your child doing up laces.
I wish all the children a good, sporty summer holiday!
