SPEEDBALL HANDOUT

BRADLEY/GONZALES

APRIL17, 2008

Speedball is a game that incorporates three other sports. The sports are Soccer, Football, and Basketball. When the ball is on the ground, it is played like soccer, when it is in the air it can be thrown like in football and a touchdown can also be scored, and when a person takes more than two steps it is like traveling in basketball. There can also be a jump ball if two people have their hands on the same ball.

The game is started with a kickoff in the middle of the field. The ball can be kicked to the other team or it can be lifted to your own teammate. There are two ways to make points. One way is to kick or throw the ball through the goal. The ball must go through the goal below the goalie’s waist. The second way to make points is to score a touchdown.

In Speedball, when you change a ground ball to an aerial ball, it is called converting. When the ball has been converted, it can be thrown to different teammates. You can go all the way down the field and go past the last cone and score a touchdown. You cannot run down the field with the ball. If you take more than two steps and/or you run with the ball, it is called traveling. If you travel, the other team gets a free kick. If you drop a ball that has been converted and thrown, it must be converted again before it can be touched. The word convert means to change.

There are several ways to convert the ball. These include: letting the ball roll up one leg, a two foot jump up, lift the ball to a teammate, roll it up the inside of the leg, roll the ball on top of the foot, and stick out your foot and let the ball roll up your leg.

A kicked or punted ball can be caught in the air or on the first bounce. This is already a converted ball.

If the ball goes out of bounds, a two-handed overhead throw in is used to bring the ball back in bounds.

The goalie is the only person who does not have to convert the ball before picking it up.

Fouls include tripping, shoving, intentional kicking, etc. A free kick is awarded for a foul. Everyone must be at least 15 feet away.
