“Motorola views its leadership in WiMax as a means to outflank larger rivals in the race to develop the next big wireless-networking technology. Instead of buying another equipment vendor, as some Wall Street analysts urge, Edward J. (Ed) Zander, Chairman and CEO of Motorola, Inc. is trying to build from within. He insists the company should avoid steeper investments in older network technologies and spend its research dollars in areas where Motorola's rivals are weak. Critics say the company has no choice. The company's networking business is on the smaller side compared to competitors such as Alcatel and Nokia. What's more, Motorola is generally a second- or third-tier supplier of the wireless technologies at the core of most existing global networks.” (MarketWatch, 08/13/2006 08:10:22 PM EDT)

1.  Motorola to acquire Broadbus Technologies “Motorola, a communications services and equipment provider, has acquired Broadbus to expand its content management and distribution capabilities. With the acquisition, Motorola will provide its customers with services like mobile video, video-on-demand (VOD), time-shifted TV, network-based digital video recording (nDVR), on-demand ad insertion (ODAI) and switched digital video (SDV).” (DMeurope, 07/26/2006 05:25:48 AM EDT) This new service shall fit in with the advent of WiMax age.

2.  “After disagreeing with the board of directors about Motorola's future in late 2003, Chris Galvin retired as chairman and CEO and Ed Zander, the former head of Sun Microsystems, took over in 2004 becoming the first person from outside the Galvin family to lead the company. (Chris Galvin was the founder's grandson.)” (Hoovers Profile)

3.  “The company in 2004 acquired embedded computing systems Force Computers from Solectron and passive optical networking equipment maker Quantum Bridge.” (Hoovers Profile)

4.  “Also in 2004 Motorola handed off its stake in StarCore when it spun off its semiconductor operations as Freescale Semiconductor, a publicly traded company. The semiconductor business had accounted for about 17% of Motorola's sales in each of the fiscal years from 2001 through 2003.” (Hoovers Profile)
