Position Summary

Senior Vice President , Hospital Portfolio

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is a not-for-profit organization leading the improvement of health care throughout the world. Founded in 1991 and based in Boston, MA, IHI is a catalyst for change, cultivating innovative concepts for improving patient care and implementing programs for putting those ideas into action. Thousands of health care providers participate in IHI’s groundbreaking work.

Position Summary:

The Senior Vice President (SVP) will lead all of IHI’s hospital sector work in the US and abroad (except in developing countries). This leader will have responsibility to achieve not only measureable results but also strong financial goals. The SVP needs to be a “doer,” driver, self-motivator, and success-driven individual.

Although not our only focus, a primary and substantial area of IHI’s work has been to improve the care provided to patients in hospitals. We need a strong candidate to lead our portfolio of hospital-related work to drive hospitals towards achieving bold aims.

This candidate will lead the clinical scope of work related to our Hospital Portfolio. The ideal candidate for the position will achieve success by:

· Building partnership relationships . The SVP of the Hospital Portfolio will build and maintain critical external relationships with hospitals, systems, associations, professional societies, and organizations we call Strategic Partners.

· Being a strong organizational leader. The SVP will effectively manage, lead, and develop relationships within IHI, a complex, matrixed organization. This leader will own all work within the Hospital Portfolio and will have responsibility for managing a team of professionals for IHI’s work in the US, Europe, and developing countries. Strong relationships with other IHI Portfolio leaders and teams, as well as faculty and staff throughout the organization, are required to be successful as the Hospital Portfolio leader.

· Being a proven manager with a track record of getting results. As an expert in setting and achieving bold aims, the SVP will establish “big dot” measures and set and achieve aggressive targets, including financial ones, for the Hospital Portfolio. This leader will scan for and establish new partnerships and opportunities, and will work with the IHI Business Development team to recommend and drive new and existing business concepts. Experience with vetting and guiding the set-up of new programs, projects, products, grants, and contracts will be necessary.

· Being a content expert and knowledge manager . The SVP will assure that programming in the Hospital Portfolio includes the best and most appropriate content possible and that programs and projects contribute to reaching the aims of the Hospital Portfolio. The SVP will be a recognized, credible content expert who can guide the development of new ideas in research and development (R&D) and drive them through R&D, prototyping, pilot testing, scale-up and spread. The ability to scan and systematically review relevant content from both inside and outside of IHI and advising about managing content across all relevant portfolios and programs will be critical.

Necessary k nowledge, s kills , and a bilities include :

· Expert knowledge of improvement methods in a clinical setting

· Expert in content relevant to hospital care across all six Institute of Medicine quality dimensions

· Experienced and skilled at managing complex, revenue-generating projects that span across multiple departments, as well as geographic settings

· Excellent writing skills as well as superb interpersonal and verbal communication skills; a master at presenting information, ideas, and results is critical

· Ability to work in a fast moving and, at times, intense environment

· Skilled at building and maintaining relationships at all levels within the organization as well as externally with allies, current partners, and potential partners

Candidate q ualifications include :

· Requires significant health care management and operational experience with a focus on improving the quality and safety of care

· Requires significant strategic experience within a hospital setting, hospital system, or association

· MD preferred, with quality improvement and patient safety skills

· An MBA or MPH strongly preferred

· The candidate must have knowledge of IHI’s mission and a willingness to embrace and actively support the unique culture and values of IHI and our work
